As most already know, the Blizzard of 2017 really affected practices for spring sports teams as well as games. Baseball and softball especially as the fields are right about now are just now starting to dry out. Some teams were able to play some league games, but some teams were not so lucky and this week will be their first week in league play. If you look at the WVC and Lackawanna League baseball and softball schedules, you can see a lot of the games had a makeup date on them. Lackawanna League agreed to move the smaller schools league play to this week (Some did play this week but at PNC Field). This week looks promising as the weather is going to greatly improve as we will get into 60s and maybe some 70s!!! Now let's look at some of the week that was.
CRESTWOOD OUTLASTS COUGHLIN
Crestwood took down Coughlin in 13 innings, 5-2. Anthony Kovalchik had 2 doubles and broke the tie in the 13th to score 2.
VALLEY WEST TAKES OPENER
Valley West returned very few starters, but they started off their season with a 2-1 win over Coughlin on Wednesday. Sophomore Nate Baranski threw a complete game, striking out 10 and Justin Vought went 3 for 3 with a double.
HOLY REDEEMER SOFTBALL TAKES TWO GAMES THIS WEEK
The defending state champs were able to play 2 games this week, taking down Lake-Lehman 12-0 Kristen Coffay and Morgan Bientkowski combined for a one-hitter. They also defeated MMI 15-0 to start the season 2-0 Brittany Hebda went 3 for 4 with 3 doubles and 4 RBIs and Kristen Coffay threw a one-hitter.
NANTICOKE SOFTBALL TAKES OPENER
The Trojanettes started off the season with a victory over division rival Wyoming Area 8-1. Jenna Lipowski went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles. Miranda Bohn threw a complete game.
RAILRIDERS
After being rained out the last two days, the Railriders were able to play Saturday afternoon and fell 4-2 to Buffalo.
In other news, this morning, Kyle Higashioka was called up to New York after the injury to Gary Sanchez. Looking like the Railriders will need to call up a catcher today for their doubleheader in Buffalo.
LOCAL PLAYERS IN THE PROS
Kyle McMyne: He appeared in the opener for Triple-A Louisville, going one inning, striking out one, walking two and didn't give up a run in his appearance. He also appeared the next night, entering in the 7th. He only gave up one hit in his inning of work.
Matt Wotherspoon: The Thunder, like the Railriders were postponed Thursday and Friday and had their opener on Saturday. Wotherspoon did not appear in their opener.
Joe McCarthy: McCarthy started the first two games at Double-A Montgomery at first base, but went 0-for-7 then didn't start yesterday and came in as a pinch hitter and struck out.
Cory Spangenberg: Spangenberg was been playing third base for Triple-A El Paso for the first three games of the season. He's gone 4 for 10 with 2 runs scored.
Mike Papi: Papi started in right field in the first two games (Friday night's game was postponed) at Double-A Akron. In two games, he went 3 for 6.
