Crestwood squeaks by Tunkhannock

The Comets coming off a big victory over big victories over Valley West and Wyoming Area last week, looked to build momentum as they hosted Tunkhannock. The Tigers came off a big win over Valley West and looked to build upon that victories. It was a battle of first place teams in Mountain Top as Colin Macko of Crestwood faced off against Matt Goodwin of Tunkhannock. Tyler Faux led off the game with a walk, moving to second on a stolen base and to third on a passed ball. With one out, Matt Goodwin would hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Faux for a 1-0 Tunkhannock lead. A groundout would end the inning. Colin Macko got hit by a pitch with one out and James Graves singled to move Macko to second but a popout and a strikeout end the inning with Goodwin holding a 1-0 lead. Dylan Mislevy hit a two out single to right but was out trying to stretch it out into a double. Curtis Tokach led off by reaching on an error, but Goodwin would retire the next three batters to hold the one run lead. Jack Fenwick would reach on an error with one out but a strikeout and a groundout ended the top of the third. Brett Caladie and Colin Macko led off the bottom of the third with singles and moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by James Graves. Justin Darden drove home Caladie on a single to tie the game at 1, then Anthony Kovalchik brought home Macko for a 2-1 lead as Kovalchik reached on an error. A popout and a flyout ended the inning. Macko threw a 1-2-3 fourth to keep the one run lead. Goodwin answered with a 1-2-3 inning of his own in the bottom of the fourth. David Baltrusaitus led off with a single to left then advanced to second on a balk. Macko would retire the next three batters to get out of the inning. Darden hit a two out single but a popup ended the fifth. Goodwin would draw a leadoff walk but a groundout ended the top of the sixth. Don Faux came in to pitch the sixth for the Tigers. Faux threw a 1-2-3 sixth to keep the Tigers deficit to one run. Macko would throw a 1-2-3 seventh for the complete game victory and the Comets fifth straight win.

Thoughts on the game: Close low scoring ballgame. Tough way for either of these teams to lose. Macko was great on the mound, allowing two hits, while striking out four. Justin Darden has continued his hot season, getting two hits today and driving in the tying run in the third. Matt Goodwin has a great game on the mound, going five inning, allowing giving up two runs and five hits.
