Railriders win first game, home opener

The Railriders came home after getting swept at Buffalo. Tonight, they hung their banner for their 2016 National Championship. In 2017, the Railriders faced their rivals from the Allentown area, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Luis Cessa started the home opener for the Railriders. Mark Appel started the game for the IronPigs. The Ironpigs' Cameron Perkins started off the top of the first with a single but was eliminated on a 4-6-3 double play and a groundout ended the top of the first. Appel threw a 1-2-3 1st to keep it scoreless. In the top of the 2nd, Cessa threw a 1-2-3 inning to keep the Ironpigs off the board. Appel would throw another 1-2-3 inning in the second. Cessa kept up with Appel by throwing a 1-2-3 once again. Ruben Tejada would lead off the bottom of the third with a walk. After a flyout, Appel induced a 5-4-3 double play to end the third. Jorge Alfaro hit a two out single to center, but Cessa struck out Dylan Cozens to end the top of the fourth. Tyler Wade led off with a single to center and would advance to second on an errant pickoff with two outs but a groundout ended the fourth inning. Rhys Hoskins led off with a double to left but Cessa retired the next three to keep it scoreless. Donovan Solano would lead off with a walk then Mason Williams used a sacrifice bunt to move Solano to second. Ruben Tejada doubled home Solano to make it 1-0 Railriders, then Ji-Man Choi singled home Tejada to make it 2-0. After a flyout to right, Tyler Wade singled to right, moving Choi to second then Clint Frazier drew a walk then Cesar Ramos came in to pitch for the IronPigs. Ramos would cause a flyout to right to end the fifth. Jesmuel Valentin led off with a single to right, but would be out on a 5-4-3 double play. JP Crawford then triple right but would be stranded there as Cessa got another strikeout to keep the shutout going. Ramos went through a 1-2-3 sixth to keep it 2-0. Dylan Cozens led off with a single to center, then Hoskins drew a walk. Cessa would induce a 4-6-3 double play but Cozens would advance to third and the Ironpigs would get a first and third situation after Taylor Featherston drew a walk then Hector Gomez grounded into a forceout to end the top of the seventh. Pedro Beato entered the game to pitch for Lehigh Valley. Beato would pitch a 1-2-3 7th to keep it 2-0. Ben Heller came in to pitch for the Railriders. Heller pitched a 1-2-3 8th to keep the shutout once again intact. Beato came in for another inning and threw another 1-2-3 inning in the 8th. Ernesto Frieri came in for the save situation. Frieri threw a 1-2-3 9th to get the save as the Railriders won their first game of the season 2-0 over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Thoughts on the game: Cessa and Appel both pitched really well. Could see both these pitchers in the major leagues very soon. JP Crawford of the Ironpigs can fly as he legged out a triple.

Up Next: The Railriders continue their four game series with Lehigh Valley. Jordan Montgomery is on the mound for the Railriders, while the IronPigs starter for starter is still TBA.

News: The Yankees optioned LHP Chasen Shreve to the Railriders this afternoon.
