The IronPigs looked to get a split of their series with the Railriders on Thursday night. The IronPigs sent Ricardo Pinto to the mound and the Railriders sent Caleb Smith who was just called up from Double-A for the start. Smith started off by showing no lag from traveling to Moosic from Trenton as he threw a 1-2-3 first inning. Pinto answered with a 1-2-3 inning of his own. Smith threw another 1-2-3 inning to make it six in a row retired. Rob Refsnyder led off with a single to left but Mason Williams would ground into a 4-6-3 double play and Donovan Solano would fly out to right to end the second. Cameron Perkins would lead off the third with a homer to left center, ending Smith's streak of retiring batters at 6. However he would retire the next three to keep the damage to one run. Ji-Man Choi led off with a single to right. After Eddy Rodriguez struck out, Cito Culver drew a walk to move Choi to second but a fly out and a line out got Pinto out of the third holding a 1-0 lead. Smith retired the IronPigs 1-2-3 getting his streak back at 6. Rob Refsnyder would lead off by singling to left then Williams would follow with a single to right moving Refsnyder to second but Donovan Solano would line out to second and doubled off Refsnyder to end the inning. Caleb Smith for a second straight inning, threw a 1-2-3 inning, retiring nine in a row. Pinto threw a 1-2-3 inning of his own to maintain a 1-0 IronPigs lead. Joe Mantiply came in to pitch for the Railriders and he would continue where Smith left off by throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth. Tyler Wade would lead off with a single to deflected off Pinto to Hector Gomez and Wade would advance to third on a throwing error. Clint Frazier would bring home Wade on a RBI groundout to tie the game at 1. Pinto would get a strikeout and a fly out to keep the game tied. Jorge Alfaro hit a one out single to center. After a strikeout, Alfaro would steal second and Rhys Hoskins drew a walk but a popout would end the Top half of the seventh for the IronPigs. Ji-Man Choi would hit a two-out single but Pinto would strikeout Eddy Rodriguez to end the seventh. Mantiply would throw a 1-2-3 eighth inning for the Railriders to keep the game tied at 1. Pedro Beato would enter the game to pitch for the IronPigs. Cito Culver led off with a single to left but a bunt attempt by Tyler Wade turned into a 2-6-4 double play and Frazier flew out to center to end the eighth tied at 1. Chasen Shreve would enter to pitch the ninth for the Railriders and would strike out two and force a groundout for a 1-2-3 inning to keep the game tied at 1. The Railriders now have a chance to walk it off in the ninth. Refsnyder would draw a one out walk, then Mason Williams doubled to right center to move the winning run to third in Refsnyder. The IronPigs would intentionally walk Solano to load the bases with one out. Ji-Man Choi would hit a fly ball to left that would score Refsnyder for a walkoff win. 2-1 over Lehigh Valley. They would take 3 of 4 from the IronPigs.
Thoughts on the game: Caleb Smith pitched a great five innings for the Railriders all things considered. Coming up from Trenton just today. Joe Mantiply pitched well, keeping the game tied at 1. Chasen Shreve also did well to keep it tied in order for Ji-Man Choi to walk it off.
News: Caleb Smith was called up today from Double-A Trenton and sent Tyler Webb to Trenton. The Webb transaction, in all likelihood was a paper transaction as they needed Smith to make the start tonight.
Up Next: The Railriders now have a three game set at home against Buffalo. Dietrich Enns gets the start for the Railriders and the Bisons will go with Mat Latos.
