Macko's magnificence propels Comets

The Valley West Spartans came to Mountain Top on Tuesday afternoon in hopes of staying unbeaten in League play as they took on Crestwood. Damian Davies got the start on the mound for the Spartans. Crestwood countered with Colin Macko. Richard Sott led off the top of the first with a walk, then advanced to second on a Vought groundout. Sott would move to third on a wild pitch. Dominic Bayo would single to center to score Sott and it's 1-0 Valley West. Bayo would be forced out at second on a Josh Montalvo fielder's choice, but the top half of inning would end on a rundown and would be out when he exited the basepath. Colin Macko would hit a one out single but a lineout would double off the courtesy runner to end the first inning. After back-to-back strikeouts, Jake Packer would reach on an error but was out trying to advance to second. Justin Darden led off by reaching on an error. Following a groundout, Darden would advance to second. Anthony Kovalchik would single to move Darden to third. Brandon Brozena would get hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Wyatt Kindler singled home Darden to tie the game at 1. Steve Wegener would give the Comets the lead when he was hit by a pitch scoring Kovalchik and a 2-1 Crestwood lead. Brett Caladie would increase the lead to 3-1 when he singled home Brozena. Zach Kobusky would enter the game to pitch for Valley West. Macko would bring in Kindler on a fielder's choice and a 4-1 advantage. In all, Crestwood scored 4 runs in the second to take a 4-1 lead after 2. Macko would pitch a 1-2-3 3rd to keep the three run advantage. Justin Darden led off with a double to left, but Kobusky would keep the Comets off the board as he retired the next three batters. Macko threw another 1-2-3 inning in the fourth. Steve Wegener would reach on an error with one out, then Caladie would single to make it first and second, then Colin Macko would hit a triple to right center to score courtesy runner Jake Antosh and Caladie to make it 6-1. Kobusky would retire the next two to end the fourth inning. Macko would retire the first two batters but Jake Packer would reach on an error to end the streak at 8, Macko's sixth strikeout of the game ended the Spartans' threat. Pat Adamski entered the game to pitch the fifth for the Spartans. Adamski would go 1-2-3 in the fifth, sandwiched between two strikeouts was a nice play by Stephen Banas at third, diving to make the catch robbing Kovalchik of his second hit of the game. Banas would start off by hitting a single, following back-to-back strikeouts, Bayo reached on a error, then Montalvo drew a walk to load the bases. Evan Knapp came in to pitch for the Comets. Sienkiewicz would draw a walk to bring in Banas to cut te deficit to 6-2, then Adamski singled to right to score Bayo and Montalvo to make it a 6-4 ballgame. Matt Trimmer came in for the Comets. Trimmer would get a big strikeout to get out of the inning. Kindler led off by getting hit by a pitch and pinch hitter Caden Rozitski moved Kindler to second on a sacrifice bunt, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning. Trimmer stayed out there for the seventh. Trimmer got the first on a comebacker back to him for the first out. Banas would then hit a single and Sott would draw a walk. Justin Vought would fly out to left, then Bayo would groundout to Graves at first for the third out as the Comets took down Valley West 6-4.

Thoughts on the game: Great game by Colin Macko, both on the mound and at the plate. On the mound, he struck out 8. At the plate, he drove in three, including two on a triple. Valley West put up a fight late in the game where they were close to tying the game but Matt Trimmer came in and shut the door, getting the save.
