Mohawks top Hawkeyes

The Mohawks came to Hanover Area High School to take on the Hawkeyes looking to stay unbeaten in Division 3. Hanover Area looked to catch Meyers in the standings. Meyers sent Ryan Gilgallon to the mound. The Hawkeyes countered with Max Mendrejezki. Jake and Dave Nargoski led off with walks, then Colin Pasone singled to load the bases. Gilgallon then drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Jake Nargoski to make it 1-0 Mohawks. Luke Bottger drove in Dave Nargoski on a single to extend the Mohawks lead to 2-0. Hanover Area then brought Matt Clarke to pitch. After a strikeout, Kenny Macko drew a bases loaded walk for a 3-0 Meyers lead. Clarke then threw back-to-back strikeouts to get to the bottom of the first. Gilgallon started off with a 1-2-3 first. Pasone got hit by a pitch with two outs but Clarke would get his fifth strikeout to end the top of the second. Gilgallon threw another 1-2-3 inning to retire 6 in a row. Bottger led off with a walk, then after two fly outs, Kyle Ostrowski singled to make it first and second but a groundout ended the 3rd for the Meyers offense. For the third straight inning, Gilgallon threw a 1-2-3 inning for nine in a row retired. Jake Nargoski singled to lead off for the Mohawks, but was out when he tried stealing second. After a fly out, Pasone and Gilgallon would draw walks, but Clarke's sixth strikeout ended the top half of the fourth. The streak ended when Kyle Windt reached on an error leading off. Mike Piscotty then followed with a single and Matt Clarke drew a walk to load the bases. Kyle Kowalski would hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Windt to get the Hawkeyes on the board but the Mohawks would get the out at third as Piscotty tried to advance. Austin Gately would keep the inning by reaching on an error and Sean Hart would single to load the bases. Joe Wheeler would drive in Clarke and Gately to tie the game at 3. A groundout would the end the fourth. Kyle Ostrowski would hit a two-out single but Clarke would record his eighth strikeout of the game to get out of it. Gilgallon threw a 1-2-3 fifth to keep the game tied. Clarke would throw a 1-2-3 sixth to keep it tied up. Gilgallon kept the game tied up as he threw once again a 1-2-3 inning. Ryan Gilgallon led off with a single and was lifted for courtesy runner Ryan Casey. Luke Bottger would move Casey to second on a sacrifice bunt, then Anthony Macko, who was 0 for 3 on the game, would hit an infield single and Casey was sent home and Kowalski's throw was not in time and the Mohawks took a 4-3 lead. A fly out and a fielder's choice ended the top half of the seventh. Gilgallon would get a bit of help from his defense. Hart looked like he could have his second hit of the game as Kyle Ostrowski left his feet and dove to catch the ball and got it for the first out of the inning. Gilgallon would induce a groundout to first for the second out. Pinch hitter Tom Mercadante would keep the game alive with an infield single but for the third out, Ostrowski struck again. Wasickanin hit a ball to right that Ostrowski dove for, robbing Wasickanin of a single, giving the Mohawks the victory 4-3 over Hanover Area. Meyers stayed undefeated in league play at 4-0.

Thoughts on the game: Gilgallon pitched a great game for the Mohawks. He threw 5 1-2-3 innings. Kyle Ostrowski played a huge part in preserving the Mohawks lead in the seventh. Matt Clarke pitched a great game for the Hawkeyes, especially given the circumstances. He came in with no outs in the first and not expecting to come in. However in that inning, he got all three outs by strikeout.
