Crestwood takes down Coughlin in extras

The Crestwood Comets came to Hilldale Park for their first league game of the season to play the Coughlin Crusaders. Jacob Lupas pitched for the Coughlin and the Comets countered with James Graves. Colin Macko led off the game with a single, then stole second. James Graves then hit a one out single to left, scoring Macko to make it a 1-0 lead. Lupas got out of the inning with a strikeout then a groundout. Graves would throw a 1-2-3 first to keep it at 1-0 Crestwood. Lupas threw a 1-2-3 2nd to keep the Comets at 1. Steve Dressler hit a one hit single then Lupas reached on an error. With runners at 1st and 2nd, it was the Crusaders' first chance to score but what occur was possibly the strangest play I've seen. Steve Wegener would block the ball then Lupas tried stealing second but the runner at second didn't go so Lupas tried going back and was tagged out then courtesy runner Wychock tried to steal third but was tagged out at third to end the inning. Steve Wegener led off with a single but Lupas would retire the next 3 to end the top half of the inning. Ben Yozwiak hit a two out single but a fielder's choice ended the third. Anthony Kovalchik hit a two out single but a poput ended the top of the fourth. TJ Wozniak led off with a double to right center. After a fly out and a strikeout, it looked like the Comets would come out of the game unscathed even after an errant pickoff, but an error caused the tying run to score but the Comets would keep the game tied after a groundout to third. Macko would draw a two out walk then stole second, then Brett Caladie drove home Macko to give the Comets a 2-1 lead. Graves would throw a 1-2-3 5th to keep the Comets the lead. Justin Darden would lead the 6th with a double to left but Lupas would retire the next three to keep it a 1 run game. Chase Nowak would reach on an error and Leroy Fettig hit a single to right to make it first and second with one out but a strikeout and a groundout to second. Pinch hitter Mick Bafunno led off with an infield single but ended up getting out trying to steal second then a popout and a flyout ended the top of the seventh. Graves retired the first two and looked like he would get a 2-1 but an error would cause Yozniak to reach base then got to second on a passed ball. Eric Christian would single to left to score Yozniak to tie the game at 2. Matt Trimmer came in to for the Comets. A walk and a balk made it first and third with two outs but a groundout to the shortstop ended the 7th and caused extra innings. James Graves would hit a one out single but Coughlin would get a 6-4-3 double play to end the top of the eighth inning. Colin Macko came in to pitch for Crestwood. Steve Dressler would hit a one out single but a strikeout and a groundout back to Macko ended the inning as we went to the 9th inning. TJ Wozniak came in to pitch for Coughlin. Kovalchik reached base on an error with one out but a popout and a strikeout ended the top of the ninth. Tony Edgio led off with a single then Yozwiak used a sacrifice bunt to move Egidio to second then Christan singled to make it first and third with one out, then Wozniak flew out to left and Edigio tried to score but Knapp would throw him out at home to end the 9th inning and entered the 10th inning. Brett Caladie would draw a two out walk but a popout ended the top of the tenth. With one out, Fettig singled then Dressler walked to make it first and second with one out. Lupas would groundout to first to move Fettig and Dressler to second and third but Macko would get a strikeout to get the Comets to the eleventh inning. Darden would lead off with a single but it would be negated with a 1-6-3 double play but Kovalchik doubled and Taleroski reached on an error. Taleroski would steal second to make it second and third with two out but a groundout to short ended the top of the 11th. Edigio led off with a single then Yozwiak again used a sac bunt to move Edigio to second. Edigio would be tagged at third to get the second out then a groundout back to Macko forced another inning. Caden Rozitski would pinch hit for the Comets to start the top of the 12th. Rozitski would double to left center then get pulled for a pinch runner in Jake Antosh. Macko would groundout to first to move Antosh to third but a lineout at second then a throw to third forced the runner out at third on a close play. Connor Kaminski would enter the game to pitch for the Comets. Kaminski would throw a 1-2-3 12th to force a 13th inning. Graves would led off by getting hit by a pitch, then Darden used a sac bunt to move Graves to second but would reach himself on an error. Tokach would then draw a walk to load the bases. Then Anthony Kovalchik would double to left center to score Graves and Darden to give the Comets a 4-2 lead. Taylor Chronowski would enter the game to pitch for the Crusaders. Matt Taleroski would drive in Tokach to make it 5-2 Comets. Chronowski then retired the next three. Chronowski would hit a one out single but a groundout to short then a strikeout ended the game with a 5-2 victory for Crestwood over the Coughlin Crusaders.

Thoughts on the game: The pitching on both sides was very good. Graves gave up 2 unearned runs and Lupas had a great game pitching, striking out 7. Anthony Kovalchik had a great game with 3 hits and 2 doubles.
