Meyers at GAR Baseball

Meyers and GAR renewed their rivalry on the baseball diamond on Saturday afternoon. Meyers looked to keep pace with Holy Redeemer and GAR came in to play spoiler. GAR sent Chris Kolativa to the hill whereas Meyers sent Kenny Macko to the mound. To lead off the game, Colin Pasone hit a ground ball which Noah Edwards dove for and threw on his knees to first for the first out. Keith Ostrowski was the next batter and he would hit a double to left, followed by a walk drawn by Ryan Gilgallon. The Mohawks got on the board first on a sacrifice fly to left by Geral Gomez and would score Ostrowski to make it 1-0. Kolativa would retire the next two to keep it the damage to one. Noah Edwards would hit a two out single but a strikeout ended the inning. Dave Nargoski and Lee Falzone would each hit one out single but Falzone would ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the top of the 2nd. Chris Kolativa led off with a single. After a flyout, Kolativa would be eliminated on a 4-6-3 double play to end the 2nd. Kolativa threw a 1-2-3 3rd to keep it 1-0. Simon Peter led off the 4th with a single but would be eliminated on the next batter by a 5-4-3 double play. Robbie Shinal then singled with two outs but a strikeout ended the inning. Geral Gomez led off with a single. Next would be some great defensive plays. Brainy Rojas hit a ball that looked like that it was destined for the gap but Gerson Peralta tracked it and dove to make the catch for the first out. The next play came in the very next batter. Ismael Lake hit a ball to second that looked like it would go over his head but Simon Peter leaped up and made the catch and threw to first for the twin killing and the end of the top of the 4th. Chris Kolativa reached on an error with two outs but a strikeout ended the threat. Jake Nargoski drew a 2 out walk then Pasone followed with a single that moved Nargoski to 2nd but a forceout at second on the next batter ended the threat in the 5th. Kenny Macko then threw a 1-2-3 5th to keep the Grenadiers off the scoreboard. Ryan Gilgallon led off the 6th by getting hit by a pitch, but would get the next three outs in order to keep it 1-0. Robbie Shinal led off the bottom of the 6th with a single, and advanced to second when Noah Edwards hit a ball to first for the second out. Jeremy Erhardt then followed with a single to score Shinal to tie the game at 1. Chris Kolativa then followed with a single but a forceout to short ended the inning. Lee Falzone would hit a one out single and would be lifted for a pinch runner in Anthony Macko, but would end up in a pickle where he was tagged out at first attempting to go back for the second out. A fly out would end the top of the 7th tied at 1. Keith Ostrowski entered the game to pitch for the Mohawks, replacing Kenny Macko. Gerson Peralta led off by hitting a double to left and would advance to third after a sacrifice by Simon Peter. Then Garry Kroll hit an infield single to score Peralta and GAR pulled off the upset of the Mohawks 2-1.

Thoughts on the game: That was a great game played defensively by both teams. I was impressed by GAR third baseman Noah Edwards who made some great plays. Four double plays were converted, two by each team. GAR kept on fighting and eventually got on the board and then won it in the seventh.
