Crestwood and Valley West played at Spartan Stadium on Friday afternoon. Crestwood looked to win their second conference game of the season and Valley West looked to stay unbeaten. Grant Powell got the start for the Spartans. James Graves started on the mound for Crestwood. Powell gave a one out single to Justin Darden but back to back strikeouts ended the top of the first. Ryan Hogan hit a 2 out single to left but Vought flew out to center to end the first inning. Curtis Tokach and Corey Chalk each hit one out singles but back to back strikeouts ended the top of the 2nd and kept it scoreless. Graves threw a 1-2-3 2nd inning to keep Valley West off the scoreboard. David McCue led off the top of the 3rd with a single and would be forced out at second on a groundout to short but Montalvo would advance to second on an overthrow and go to third on an errant pickoff but a groundout to third ended the third. Powell threw a 1-2-3 4th to keep the Comets off the scoreboard. Graves would match Powell with a 1-2-3 4th as well. RJ Kresge lead off the top of the 5th with a single and Jimmy Albee would sacrifice to third but would be reach on an error. Kresge and Albee both advanced one base for a second and third with no outs. Crestwood would finally break through when Brett Caladie singled home Kresge for a 1-0 Crestwood lead. Powell would retire the next three to end the top of the 5th. Dominic Bayo led off the bottom of the 4th with a single to right. Eric Raitter sacrificed to first base for the first out and then David McCue popped out to short. Mike Pollick came in to pinch hit for Dillon Yuhas, who would re-enter the game. Mike Pollick hit a ball hard to short, but Derek Distasio dove and caught it to end the 5th inning. Anthony Kovalchik came in to pinch hit for the Comets in the top of the 6th and singled to lead off the inning, but was forced out at second. RJ Kresge drew a 2 out wall but a fly out to left ended the top of the sixth. Mark Popson drew a one out walk and stole second and Ryan Hogan walked with one out but Justin Vought grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Colin Macko entered the game to pinch hit for the Comets and reached on an error but a pop out ended the inning. Tyler Yankosky grounded out to second for the first out and Dominic Bayo singled to give the Spartans a chance to tie the game. Colin Macko came in to pitch for the Comets and induced a grounder to third for the second out. David McCue walked with two outs but Dillon Yuhas grounded out to short for the final out of the game and the Comets pull off the upset of the Valley West Spartans 1-0.
Thoughts on the game: Another 1-0 game for Crestwood, they are 2-1 in those games. James Graves and Grant Powell pitched great games. Powell striking out 10 and only walking 1. The Crestwood defense played a great game, Derek Distasio's diving catch to end the 5th inning was one of the best catches I saw and then an inning-ending double play in the 6th was a big momentum swing for the Comets.
