Meyers at GAR Baseball

Meyers and GAR renewed their rivalry on the baseball diamond on Saturday afternoon. Meyers looked to keep pace with Holy Redeemer and GAR came in to play spoiler. GAR sent Chris Kolativa to the hill whereas Meyers sent Kenny Macko to the mound. To lead off the game, Colin Pasone hit a ground ball which Noah Edwards dove for and threw on his knees to first for the first out. Keith Ostrowski was the next batter and he would hit a double to left, followed by a walk drawn by Ryan Gilgallon. The Mohawks got on the board first on a sacrifice fly to left by Geral Gomez and would score Ostrowski to make it 1-0. Kolativa would retire the next two to keep it the damage to one. Noah Edwards would hit a two out single but a strikeout ended the inning. Dave Nargoski and Lee Falzone would each hit one out single but Falzone would ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the top of the 2nd. Chris Kolativa led off with a single. After a flyout, Kolativa would be eliminated on a 4-6-3 double play to end the 2nd. Kolativa threw a 1-2-3 3rd to keep it 1-0. Simon Peter led off the 4th with a single but would be eliminated on the next batter by a 5-4-3 double play. Robbie Shinal then singled with two outs but a strikeout ended the inning. Geral Gomez led off with a single. Next would be some great defensive plays. Brainy Rojas hit a ball that looked like that it was destined for the gap but Gerson Peralta tracked it and dove to make the catch for the first out. The next play came in the very next batter. Ismael Lake hit a ball to second that looked like it would go over his head but Simon Peter leaped up and made the catch and threw to first for the twin killing and the end of the top of the 4th. Chris Kolativa reached on an error with two outs but a strikeout ended the threat. Jake Nargoski drew a 2 out walk then Pasone followed with a single that moved Nargoski to 2nd but a forceout at second on the next batter ended the threat in the 5th. Kenny Macko then threw a 1-2-3 5th to keep the Grenadiers off the scoreboard. Ryan Gilgallon led off the 6th by getting hit by a pitch, but would get the next three outs in order to keep it 1-0. Robbie Shinal led off the bottom of the 6th with a single, and advanced to second when Noah Edwards hit a ball to first for the second out. Jeremy Erhardt then followed with a single to score Shinal to tie the game at 1. Chris Kolativa then followed with a single but a forceout to short ended the inning. Lee Falzone would hit a one out single and would be lifted for a pinch runner in Anthony Macko, but would end up in a pickle where he was tagged out at first attempting to go back for the second out. A fly out would end the top of the 7th tied at 1. Keith Ostrowski entered the game to pitch for the Mohawks, replacing Kenny Macko. Gerson Peralta led off by hitting a double to left and would advance to third after a sacrifice by Simon Peter. Then Garry Kroll hit an infield single to score Peralta and GAR pulled off the upset of the Mohawks 2-1.

Thoughts on the game: That was a great game played defensively by both teams. I was impressed by GAR third baseman Noah Edwards who made some great plays. Four double plays were converted, two by each team. GAR kept on fighting and eventually got on the board and then won it in the seventh.

Both Williams and Graves went 1-2-3 innings in the first and second innings. Garrett Weston and Noah Gorski each drew two out walks but a ground out to third for the third out of the top of the 3rd. Brett Caladie got hit by a pitch with two outs but a fielder's choice got Williams out of the inning. Hunter Nice got on base by an error with one out but a ground out by second and a popout ended the top of the 4th. Williams pitched a 1-2-3 4th. James Graves got a 1-2-3 5th inning with a little help from his defense. For the first out, Tommy Williams hit a ball that looked like it would be a single but Distasio went to his right and threw to Chalk for the first out. Jake Tomolonis hit a ball to second on a line that Brett Caladie snagged for the second out, then a groundout to short ended the inning. Curtis Tokach would reach on a error and would be replaced by Mike Paranich as a pinch runner. Paranich would steal second then advanced to third on a single by Jimmy Albee but a groundout back to Williams ended the threat. Zach Brucher would reach on an error but would end up getting out when trying to steal 2nd base. Colin Macko would hit a two out single but a flyout ended the 6th. Hunter Nice led off the 7th with a single but would be out at second on a forceout to third and Graves would retire the next 2 to end the top of the 7th. Williams would throw a 1-2-3 7th to force extra innings. Colin Macko replaced James Graves on the mound for the Comets. Garrett Weston would draw a 1 out walk, then Noah Gorski and Tyler Kolb each got hit by pitches to load the bases. Zach Brucher would break the tie on a groundout to second that scored Weston to make it 1-0 Black Knights. A flyout would then end the top half of the 8th. Jimmy Albee led off the bottom of the 8th with a single, then advanced to second when Brett Caladie sacrificed to the pitcher. Distasio then singled when they attempted to tag Albee but they weren't able to tag him and everyone was safe. Distasio and Albee advanced to second and third when Darden grounded out. After the Black Knights intentionally walked Colin Macko, Tim Kindler came to the plate. Kindler hit a ball to third that looked like the final out of the game but the ball was misplayed and couldn't get to the base in time so the game was tied at 1. Brandon Brozena had a chance to end the game but he hit a ball back to the pitcher for the final out of the inning. Mike Sikora got hit by a pitch with one out, but Macko would retire the next two to end the top of the 9th. Tyler Kolb replaced Tommy Williams on the mound for the Black Knights. Curtis Tokach would draw a lead off walk. Tokach would then advance to second when Corey Chalk sacrifice to the pitcher. After a flyout, Brett Caladie would single to left, Tokach would try to score but would be tagged out at the plate to end the 9th inning. Tyler Kolb hit a 2 out single and then Brucher drew a walk but a forceout at second got the Comets out of the top of the 10th. Kolb threw a 1-2-3 10th to get it to the 11th inning. Chris Hadsell drew a lead off walk for the Black Knights. Wyatt Kindler then came in to relief Macko. Mike Sikora would then hit a single, moving Hadsell to move to second. Hadsell would be forced out at third when a bunt was played by Chalk who threw to third for the first out of the 11th. Garrett Weston then drew a 2 out walk to load the bases. Noah Gorski then followed with a walk to score Sikora to make it 2-1 Lake-Lehman. Connor Kaminski came in relief of Wyatt Kindler and induce a groundout to force Gorski at second to end the 11th. Tim Kindler led off with a single and would be lifted for a pinch runner in Matt Taleroski. Matt Taleroski would then be picked off at first for the first out. RJ Kresge would then single but would be forced out at second on a ground ball to short. With 2 outs, Corey Chalk hit a ball to center but Noah Gorski would then dive to catch the final out of the game and the Black Knights would take this marathon game 2-1 in 11 innings.

Thoughts on the game: One heck of a pitcher's duel. Really liked Tommy Williams, threw a lot of first pitch strikes and kept his pitch count low. Ty His defense made a lot of plays behind him. James Graves pitched a great game as well. Crestwood has been apart of 4 1-run games, going 2-2.

Wyoming Area at Crestwood Baseball

Wyoming Area and Crestwood played in Mountain Top on Monday afternoon, each putting their five game winning streak on the line. Matt Mickowski got the start for the Comets and the Warriors countered with Corey Lescavage. Mike Bonita lead off the game with an infield single, then advanced to second on an errant pickoff. Bonita advanced to third on a ground ball to second. Josh Kopcza hit a sac fly to left to score Bonita to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. A flyout to center ended the top of the 1st. Lescavage threw a 1-2-3 first inning. Mickowski threw a 1-2-3 2nd to keep it 1-0 Warriors. Lescavage started off by getting the first 2 outs of the inning, but Kresge and Tokach would each reach on errors, but a ground ball to second ended the threat. Brandon Charney led off the 3rd with a single, then advanced to second on a passed ball and went to third when Aaron Lee sacrificed to the pitcher. Mike Bonita would drive in Charney to make it 2-0 Wyoming Area. Bonita advanced to second on a stolen base then scored when Lescavage singled. Lescavage stole second then Kopcza drew a walk then Cole Keating singled home Lescavage to make it 4-0. Anthony Nardell then singled to load the bases. Tyler Dougherty would bring in Kopcza and Keating on a Fielder's choice to make it 6-0. The inning would end with a ground out to short. The Warriors had batted around. Steve Wegener and Derek Distasio would lead off the bottom of the 3rd by reaching on an error. Courtesy runner Matt Taleroski would reach third on Distasio's error and he would advance to second on that error. Lescavage would retire the next 3 batters to end the 3rd. Matt Trimmer came in to pitch for the Comets and replaces Matt Mickowski. Charney drew a leadoff walk and Aaron Lee singled and Mike Bonita would bring in Charney on a Fielder's choice RBI to make it 7-0. Trimmer would retire the next two to end the top of the 4th. Steve Homza lead off the inning striking out but reached on a passed ball, but would be eliminated on a 6-3 double play, then a groundout to third ended the top of the 6th. Tim Kindler hit a two-out single but a ground out ended the inning. Josh Kopcza hit a two out single but on the next batter, Curtis Tokach made a long throw from third base to get Keating for thee third out. Tokach led off the bottom of the 7th with a single then advanced to second when the ball in the outfield was misplayed. Jimmy Albee then followed with a walk. Pinch hitter Anthony Kovalchik flew to right then Distasio was out on an infield fly. Brandon Brozena would single to load the bases, then James Graves singled home Tokach and Albee to cut the Warriors lead to 7-2. Colin Macko then followed with a single to score Brozena and made it 7-3. Matt Wright relieved Corey Lescavage and he would strike out Tim Kindler to end the inning and the Warriors snapped Crestwood's 5 game streak and they stay unbeaten 7-3.

Thoughts on the game: The third inning made the difference for Wyoming Area, scoring 5 runs in the inning and cruising from there. Cory Lescavage pitched a great game, keeping the Comets off the board for six innings. The Comets had their chances to score in the second and third but couldn't capitalize on them.

The Surprises keep coming

Well, we are at around the midway point of HS Baseball and Softball. Back in the pre-season, there's usually teams that have a lot of expectations like Valley West Baseball and Holy Redeemer softball who have high expectations and meet them and there are some that don't have a lot and fly under the radar. However, there are some that come out of nowhere and surprise you and there are those that come in with expectations and the team turns out to be somewhat disappointing.  Here today, I will go and put in my surprises at the midpoint of the season.

SURPRISE NO 1
This was the one team on Twitter that was outraged I didn't even put on the Top 25 and it was Wyoming Area. To be fair, when you lose your top 2 pitchers and only return 3 starters in general, chances are that outsiders aren't going to think highly of you going into the season. Wyoming Area is surprising in that they're undefeated and have looked impressive in doing so and earning the No 5 ranking in this week's countdown. They will have some tests coming up this as they play Crestwood and Valley West.

SURPRISE NO 2
Crestwood was a team I did not see coming. Their first game was a 1-0 loss to Coughlin and they had chances to potentially take the game if they got a timely hit. Then they played the next week and beat Hazleton Area and Valley West 1-0 on the road on back-to-back days. What did they do this week, you ask? They rattled off 3 straight victory to extend the winning streak to 5 and outscored their opponents 30-10. They are also in a tie for first place with Valley West. They have a tough test on Monday as they host Wyoming Area.

SURPRISE NO 3
Holy Redeemer was just a team that was gutted by graduation. If you would have told me that Redeemer would be in first place, I wouldn't have bought it. The Royals did have a No 1 in Tony Moltoris but I wasn't positive who their No 2 would be. Enter sophomore Sean Wills, who is 2-0 with an ERA of 0 with 8 strikeouts. His victories were against Nanticoke and Hanover Area and the victory against Hanover Area was a shutout. The big thing about this team is that they only have 4 seniors, and only 1 plays.

SURPRISE NO 4
When making my pre-season Top 25, I had some thoughts about putting Meyers on the list. I ultimately didn't because I wasn't sure about the pitching. Well, their strength has been their pitching thus far. They are tied for first place with Holy Redeemer. Ryan Gilgallon has turned into the ace of the Mohawks staff. He's 3-0, an ERA of 1 and 14 strikeouts.

SURPRISE NO 5
This was something that no one would see coming nor did I think it could actually happen. That something was back-to-back no-hitters by Dallas pitcher Lee Eckert. When you usually throw a no-hitter, you usually don't think it could happen again. True, he did have a bad outing against Wyoming Area but that doesn't invalidate what he accomplished. There are pitchers that are going Division 1 and might give up a hit or two but to throw a no-hitter let alone back-to-back is just a daunting task.

Pittston Area at Crestwood Baseball

Pittston Area and Crestwood continued their rivalry on Friday afternoon in Mountain Top. The Comets were looking for  Colin Macko got the start on the mound and the Patriots countered with Chris Merithew. Colin Macko started the top of the first with a 1-2-3 inning. Chris Merithew would also have a 1-2-3 1st with a little help from his defense and himself. Justin Darden had a hard hit ball to third caught by Turonis and then for the final out of the inning, Merithew caught a liner non-chalantly for the out. Riley Brody led off the 2nd by getting hit by a pitch, would later advance on a passed ball and then advanced to third when Turonis reached on an error. Brody would later score on a wild pitch to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead. Two strikeouts and a fielder's choice would end the top of the 2nd. Colin Macko led off the top of the 2nd with a single, Taleroski came in to courtesy run and would advance to second on a stolen base. Tim Kindler drew a walk, then RJ Kresge sacrificed to the pitcher to move Taleroski and Kindler to 2nd and 3rd. Corey Chalk would draw a walk to load the bases. Jimmy Albee would hit a hard hit ball that was misplayed and Taleroski scored to tie the game at 1 and everyone ended up safe. Steve Wegener then followed with a single that scored Kindler to give the Comets a 2-1 lead. Derek Distasio then hit a sac fly to left to score Chalk and make it 3-1. Darden would then reach on an error and the error resulted in Albee and courtesy runner Mike Paranich to score and make it 5-1 after 2 innings. Joe DeLucca doubled to lead off the 3rd and would advance to third when O'Fier grounded out to second. DeLucca would score on an RBI double by CJ Pisack to cut Crestwood's lead to 5-2. Macko got into a jam later on in the inning. He would walk Brody and Merithew to load up the bases with 2 outs but Macko would answer with a strikeout to get out of it. Macko led off the inning with a single but courtesy runner Matt Taleroski would be caught stealing third for the first out of the 3rd. Tim Kindler would hit a ball to center but would end up being caught by a diving DeLucca for the second out. RJ Kresge would reach base by getting hit by a pitch, then advanced to 2nd on a passed ball, then Corey Chalk singled to score Kresge to make it 6-1 but Chalk would be out trying to advance to second. Jeff Donnora would lead off the top of the 4th with a bunt single and would advance to second and third on errant pick off throws and would score when Albert Zuba grounded out to second to cut the lead to 6-3. A groundout and a flyout ended the top half of the 4th. Derek Distasio hit a two-out single and Justin Darden drew a walk but a flyout to right ended the inning. CJ Pisack led off with a bloop single and would advance to second on a wild pitch and advance to third on a ground ball to second and score on an RBI groundout by Kyle Turonis to make it 6-4 A flyout ended the top half of the 5th. Alex McAndrew came in of relief of Merithew. Macko lead off with his third hit of the night, a double down the right field line, Tim Kindler drew a walk and then Kresge walked to lead the bases. Aidan Joplin entered to pitch for the Patriots. Jimmy Albee singled home Taleroski to make it 7-4 but a strikeout and a groundout ended the inning. Matt Trimmer relieved Colin Macko after 5 innings of work. Trimmer would give up a 2 out single to Albert Zuba but a groundout ended the top of the 6th. Brett Caladie would lead off by reaching on an error, then Graves hitting a single. Matt Trimmer would move over Caladie and Graves to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. Tim Kindler would end up grounding out but the first basemen ended up losing the ball and Caladie would score to make it 8-4. RJ Kresge then followed with a single to score Graves and a 9-4 lead, then Chalk doubled to left to make it 10-4 after 6. Trimmer threw a 1-2-3 7th inning to record the save and the Comets would win their 5th straight game.

Thoughts on the game: The bats keep on going for Crestwood this week. After only scoring 2 runs last week, they scored a total of 30 runs totals this week. Colin Macko overall had a great game, both at the plate and on the mound. On the mound, the sophomore went 5 innings and got the win. At the plate, he had 3 hits with a double. For Pittston Area, CJ Pisack had a good game at the plate, going 2 for 4 with an RBI double.

Dallas at Crestwood Baseball

Crestwood coming off a big upset victory over Valley West, hosted Dallas. Dallas was just handed their first loss on Monday against Wyoming Area. Matt Mickowski was the starter for Crestwood and Christo Huntingdon started for Dallas. Mickowski started the game with a 1-2-3 inning. Derek Distasio led off the bottom of the 1st with a single. Then with two outs, Colin Macko hit a single to score Distasio for a 1-0 Comets lead. Tim Kindler then followed with a single but a ground out to second ended the 1st. Mickowski threw another 1-2-3 inning to retire 6 in a row. Brandon Brozena drew a leadoff walk, Brozena advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jimmy Albee, he then advanced to third on a passed ball. Steve Wegener then drew a walk, then courtesy runner Matt Taleroski stole second to give them a second and third with one out. Derek Distasio would then single to score Brozena and Wegener to make it 3-0 Comets. Darden then followed with a walk then Graves singled and Distasio would score when the ball went past the outfielder to make it 4-0. A pop out and a groundout ended the inning. Ryan Martin led by getting hit by a pitch but Mickowski would then retire the next 3 to end the top of the 3rd. RJ Kresge would led off the inning with a single and would advance to 3rd when the outfielder misplayed the ball and would score on a bloop single by Brandon Brozena to make it 5-0. Wegener would then hit a one out single. Justin Darden hit a 2 out single to score Brozena and courtesy runner Matt Taleroski scored when attempting to go home, looked like he would be out but the cut off man over threw to the catcher and it was 7-0 Crestwood. Graves would then single home Darden for an 8-0 lead. JD Barrett lead off the 4th with a single to break up the no-hitter. Barrett advanced to second when Simpson hit a ball to first for the first out. Yurko then singled to move Barrett to third. Lee Eckert would ground into a fielder's choice to score Barrett to end Crestwood's shutout streak at 20 innings. Mickowski would then get a strikeout to end the top of the 4th. Brandon Brozena hit a two out single followed by a Jimmy Albee walk but a flyout ended the threat. Mickowski then threw another 1-2-3 inning in the 5th. Derek Distasio led off with a single, advanced to second when Graves singled. Graves would be out on a forceout but Distasio moved to third. He scored when Paranich attempted to steal second and the throw was overthrown to make it 9-1. Matt Mickowski had another 1-2-3 inning. Brandon Brozena singled to lead off the bottom of the 6th then pinch hitter Anthony Kovalchik singled to move Brozena to second. Derek Distasio would then double to score Brozena and Kovalchik advanced to third. Brett Caladie would then single home Kovalchik to give Crestwood the victory in 6 innings 11-1.

Thoughts on the game: Crestwood got the bats going today. Matt Mickowski had another great start, I thought that was his best start of the season. Derek Distasio hit very well, going 4 for 5 and so did Brandon Brozena for his first varsity start, going 3 for 3 with a walk and an RBI.

Upsets, shutouts and parody

Well the weather broke and plenty of baseball and softball was played this past week. Though the week did start with some rain, there was some pretty interesting stuff that happened in District 2 Baseball and Softball. There were a few upsets, a bunch of shutouts and some interesting parody especially in WVC Division 3 and a few surprises. Who knows what could happen in this upcoming week or even as we get deeper into the regular season and playoffs. My Top 25 changed a bunch in both baseball and softball. Though the Top 2 in softball didn't change because neither fell this week but in baseball, there was certainly some change. Let's look at the week that was in District 2.

CRESTWOOD BASEBALL PULLS OFF UPSETS IN BACK-TO-BACK DAYS
Crestwood pulled off not one, but TWO big upsets this week. What was the most surprising both were 1-0 wins against Hazleton Area and Valley West on the road. The first time in ten years that Crestwood won against both of them on the road. Against Hazleton Area on Thursday afternoon, Matt Mickowski went the distance, throwing a 1-hitter, which was an infield single and Derek Distasio singled home Matt Taleroski in the top of the 7th as they pulled off the victory. Facing Valley West the next day, Brett Caldie singled home RJ Kresge in the 5th and James Graves went 6 1/3 innings, throwing a 4 hitter and Colin Macko got the save as Crestwood upset Valley West. The most amazing is that Crestwood's shutout streak stands at 17 innings and 1 run in 21 innings in league play. They face a three game week this week with the likes of Dallas, Tunkhannock and Pittston Area.

NANTICOKE SOFTBALL WINS TWO BIG GAMES THIS WEEK
The Nanticoke Trojanettes went and beat Tunkhannock on Wednesday afternoon 5-4 when Cassie Novakowski brought home Keira Brown. Then on Saturday afternoon, the Trojanettes had another nail-biter as they knocked off Wyoming Area 4-2 in ten innings.

LEE ECKERT DOES IT AGAIN
If anyone can recall Johnny Vander Meer, he was the only player in Major League history to throw back-to-back no-hitters. Well, Lee Eckert threw another no-hitter in a victory against Lake-Lehman. Their scoreless streak ended on Friday against Tunkhannock at 16 but they still got the victory on Friday afternoon. They play Wyoming Area on Monday with first place on the line then play at Crestwood on Tuesday who currently own the best shutout streak this season in the WVC then Valley West on Thursday.

HOLY REDEEMER SOFTBALL STAYS UNBEATEN
Holy Redeemer stayed unbeaten by knocking off Northwest 7-0 and Hanover Area 8-3.

WVC DIVISION 3 PARODY
For the first time in a while, it's looking like Division 3 can be a very interesting race, for the most part, Hanover Area has dominated this division. Here's what happened this week for this to occur. Wyoming Seminary knocked off Hanover Area 1-0, but then Hanover Area knocked off unbeaten Northwest. Meyers was at one point the only undefeated team but then fell to Holy Redeemer on Friday afternoon. This week could provide some separation with Meyers hosting Hanover Area on Monday and then Hanover Area hosting Holy Redeemer on Wednesday.

WEST SCRANTON BASEBALL SWEEPS SCRANTON
West Scranton starts off 3-0 as they swept their crosstown rival Scranton, including completing the sweep at PNC Field on Saturday night.

ABINGTON HEIGHTS SOFTBALL TAKES THREE GAMES IN THE WEEK
Abington Heights started off by knocking off Honesdale 12-1 on Tuesday, then on Wednesday, beat Scranton Prep 3-0 then the next day they completed their sweep of Scranton Prep by beating them 12-3.

Aaron Judge hit a one out home run to right to cut the Chiefs lead to 2-1 but back to back strikeouts ended the inning. Tony Campana singled with two outs but a forceout ended the inning. Espino threw a 1-2-3 2nd inning. Scott Sizemore drew a 1 out walk but a 6-4-3 double play ended the top of the 3rd. Espino retired the side on another 1-2-3 inning. Caleb Ramsey singled with two outs but a forceout ended the inning. Espino would make 9 in a row with another 1-2-3 inning. Crestwood at Valley West Baseball

Crestwood and Valley West played at Spartan Stadium on Friday afternoon. Crestwood looked to win their second conference game of the season and Valley West looked to stay unbeaten. Grant Powell got the start for the Spartans. James Graves started on the mound for Crestwood. Powell gave a one out single to Justin Darden but back to back strikeouts ended the top of the first. Ryan Hogan hit a 2 out single to left but Vought flew out to center to end the first inning. Curtis Tokach and Corey Chalk each hit one out singles but back to back strikeouts ended the top of the 2nd and kept it scoreless. Graves threw a 1-2-3 2nd inning to keep Valley West off the scoreboard. David McCue led off the top of the 3rd with a single and would be forced out at second on a groundout to short but Montalvo would advance to second on an overthrow and go to third on an errant pickoff but a groundout to third ended the third. Powell threw a 1-2-3 4th to keep the Comets off the scoreboard. Graves would match Powell with a 1-2-3 4th as well. RJ Kresge lead off the top of the 5th with a single and Jimmy Albee would sacrifice to third but would be reach on an error. Kresge and Albee both advanced one base for a second and third with no outs. Crestwood would finally break through when Brett Caladie singled home Kresge for a 1-0 Crestwood lead. Powell would retire the next three to end the top of the 5th. Dominic Bayo led off the bottom of the 4th with a single to right. Eric Raitter sacrificed to first base for the first out and then David McCue popped out to short. Mike Pollick came in to pinch hit for Dillon Yuhas, who would re-enter the game. Mike Pollick hit a ball hard to short, but Derek Distasio dove and caught it to end the 5th inning. Anthony Kovalchik came in to pinch hit for the Comets in the top of the 6th and singled to lead off the inning, but was forced out at second. RJ Kresge drew a 2 out wall but a fly out to left ended the top of the sixth. Mark Popson drew a one out walk and stole second and Ryan Hogan walked with one out but Justin Vought grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Colin Macko entered the game to pinch hit for the Comets and reached on an error but a pop out ended the inning. Tyler Yankosky grounded out to second for the first out and Dominic Bayo singled to give the Spartans a chance to tie the game. Colin Macko came in to pitch for the Comets and induced a grounder to third for the second out. David McCue walked with two outs but Dillon Yuhas grounded out to short for the final out of the game and the Comets pull off the upset of the Valley West Spartans 1-0.

Thoughts on the game: Another 1-0 game for Crestwood, they are 2-1 in those games. James Graves and Grant Powell pitched great games. Powell striking out 10 and only walking 1. The Crestwood defense played a great game, Derek Distasio's diving catch to end the 5th inning was one of the best catches I saw and then an inning-ending double play in the 6th was a big momentum swing for the Comets.

Story of the Week

-The week has been basically been about a rookie named Trevor Story of the Colorado Rockies. In 6 games this week, Story has hit 7 HRs, which is a major league record for most home runs in that span.
-The Padres this week were pretty hot and cold. In their first 3 games against the Dodgers, they failed to score a run in 27 innings, which was a major league record. It extended to 30 innings in their game at Colorado but after that inning, they ended up scoring 13, 16 and 3 for a combined 32 runs in 3 games. Hard to believe, right?
-The Cubs have come into this season expected to be one of the favorites to win a World Series, well they had some devastating news occur as slugger Kyle Schwarber collided with Dexter Fowler in the outfield where he tore his LCL and ACL and would miss all of this season. This would hurt most teams, but this team had great depth in their outfield as they signed Jason Heyward in the offseason and surprisingly re-signed Dexter Fowler to play centerfield. Kris Bryant can move to left field if needed or Jorge Soler and Matt Szczur can play there as well. As for their lineup, with guys like Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant, this team was set in their lineup, especially with them signing Ben Zobrist. So I would say this team will just fine. Speaking of them on the field, the Cubs ended up taking 3 of 4 in Arizona and are now 5-1 on the season.
-Well, it's an even year, so does that mean possibly another World Series for the Giants? Well, they are starting off well, they are in 1st place in the NL West at 5-2, still a long way away but hey we have seen this before about the Giants.
-The Orioles have been quite surprising early on with them being the lone undefeated team left in the majors. But Manny Machado has looked very good in the first week, hitting .429 with 3 home runs. Also one of their new additions Mark Trumbo is hitting .474.
-The Mets have started off the season a little disappointing, sure they split with the Royals but then they came home and lost 2 of 3 to the Phillies. I know it's a bit early to panic but still a little concerning.
-The Yankees acquired Starlin Castro from the Cubs this offseason and has the move payed off in the first week. He's hitting .452 with 2 Home runs and 8 RBIs. Brian McCann has also been hitting well in this early season, hitting .467.
-A rookie who is generally hitting very well but is being overshadowed by Trevor Story is Houston Astros first baseman Tyler White, he's hitting .556 with 3 HRs and 9 RBIs, not as gaudy as Trevor Story's number but that is still pretty impressive. He is tied for the team lead in HRs with last year's rookie of the year Carlos Correa.
-The defending World Series Champion Kansas City Royals have at a 4-1 start. Today, they won a game on a walk-off wild pitch, pretty crazy how the Royals win games.

Weather Wars

Rain, cold, baseball, and snow. This is how the first week of April was for Northeastern Pennsylvania. Some teams didn't even get a game in this week, though Lackawanna League teams in Division 1 and 2 in baseball and softball don't start their league play til Monday. Even when the games were played, the teams had to deal with chilly conditions. Some teams were lucky to get 2 games in this week especially in the Wyoming Valley Conference. There are times I see stuff like "We're not going to get to play the District Finals til late June." This is something I have learned though my 13 seasons of being in High School baseball and softball is this: There is usually a good span of bad weather and then you get a great span of dry and very nice weather, it is just a matter of getting there. Now let's look at the week that was in District 2

NOWAK THROWS COMPLETE GAME SHUTOUT
Chase Nowak made his first start a memorable one, striking out 7 and getting out of several jams in a 1-0 victory at Crestwood. His counterpart Matt Mickowski of Crestwood, also pitched a great game, only giving up a run in 5 innings of work. Coughlin's Steve Dressler drove in TJ Wozniak for the game's only run.

VALLEY WEST AND HANOVER AREA BASEBALL TAKE TWO GAMES THIS WEEK
The No 1 team on the NEPA SportsPage Top 25 Baseball countdown, played two games and took both games, beating Hazleton Area 10-3 and knocking off Coughlin 10-6. Tyler Yankosky went 5 innings and struck out 6 and didn't walk a batter against Hazleton Area. Also going 2 for 2 at the plate with a run scored. Ryan Hogan drove in 2 and Grant Powell got the win on the mound in their victory against Coughlin.
The No 2 team in the baseball countdown Hanover Area took two games this week. They beat MMI on Tuesday. Kevin Rimmer threw a complete-game 4 hitter, striking out 11. John Morgan drove in 2 runs. They would also beat their rival Nanticoke 7-1 on Wednesday. Kyle Kowalski got the win on the mound and would drive in 2 at the plate. Kevin Rimmer hit 2 HRs and drive in 4.

PITTSTON AREA SOFTBALL TAKES TWO
Pittston Area knocked off Berwick 9-3. Taylor Baloga struck out 8. Pittston Area also knocked off Coughlin 21-5. Nina Cencetti struck out 8 without walking a batter. Mindina Lieback had 4 RBIs for PA.

LEE ECKERT THROWS A NO-HITTER FOR DALLAS
Lee Eckert threw a no-hitter in a 7-0 victory over Berwick. Shoutout for the defense around him, recording 19 outs of his 21 outs.

WYOMING AREA SOFTBALL TAKES 2 OUT OF 3 THIS WEEK
Wyoming Area started off the week by losing to Tunkhannock 2-0 but would end up winning their next 2 by knocking off Lake-Lehman 13-2 and Dallas 5-4

LAKELAND BASEBALL WINS OPENER
Brad Richards went 6 innings, striking out 8 and Matt Hayes went 2 for 2 with a HR and 4 RBIs as Lakeland beat Dunmore 9-1.

HOLY REDEEMER SOFTBALL STARTS OFF SEASON WITH A VICTORY
The Defending 2A State Softball Champion Holy Redeemer knocked off Meyers 15-0. Kayla Coffay struck out 8 in 5 innings.
