Williamsport takes the Subregional, advances to States

The Williamsport Millionaires took the long trip to PNC Field for the District 2/4 Subregional Final to take on the Scranton Knights. Scranton coming off a big victory over rival West Scranton hoped to take the Subregional Title after being a five seed. The Millionaires went to Tanner Esposito. The Knights started Ross Zanghi. Esposito started the Top of the first with a 1-2-3 inning. Zanghi answered with a 1-2-3 inning of his own to keep the game scoreless after one. Esposito threw his second consecutive 1-2-3 inning in the second. Jalen Jackson would reach on an error to lead off the bottom of the second. Joe Fagano would move Jackson to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ethen Stryker would bring home Jackson on a single to make it 1-0 Millionaires. A lineout to short would cause a 6-3 double play to end the second. Tim Stankowski would reach on an error but Mike Weber would throw him out to end the inning. Weber would start the bottom of the third by getting hit by a pitch. Cody Shimp would move Weber to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jesse Cornell would hit a triple to left center to score Weber for the 2-0 lead. Elliott Walker would use a squeeze play and would be successful as the throw home was misfired for a 3-0 lead. Quincy Brown would single to move Walker to third, Brown would go to second on the throwing error. Jackson would walk to load the bases.  Fagnano would bring home Walker on a sacrifice fly to center to make it 4-0 Williamsport. Stryker would strike again with a single that scored Brown and Jackson to increase the lead to 6-0. A popout would end the inning. Esposito would throw another 1-2-3 inning, highlighted by a diving catch by right fielder Cody Shimp for the third out. Weber hit a leadoff single then the Knights would go to Aiden Santorsa in relief. Shimp would move Weber to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a flyout, Walker would hit a single but a flyout would end the inning. Zanghi would get hit by a pitch with one out but a flyout and a strikeout would keep the Knights off the board. Santorso would throw a 1-2-3 fifth inning for the Knights. The Knights would get their first hit of the game with a Nick Montoro single that hit the third base bag but Esposito would retire the next three batters. Pinch hitter Cam Pardoe would lead off by getting on by an error. Weber moved Pardoe to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a popout. Cornell would bring home Pardoe for a 7-0 Millionaire lead. Walker would score Cornell for the 8-0 advantage. Pinch hitter Ryan Jolin would hit a single then Jackson hit a double that scored Walker and Brown to give the Millionaires the District 2/4 Subregional Crown with the 10-0 victory in six innings over Scranton.

Thoughts on the game: I was really impressed by Williamsport. They looked very good, especially Ethen Stryker who drove in three runs. The Knights had a tough time getting anything going with Esposito on the mound. He had a great game, giving up one hit and throwing a shutout.
