The Crestwood Comets and the North Pocono Trojans played at the Mountain Top American Legion on Saturday afternoon. The winner would take on Valley West in the District Semifinals. Colin Macko got the start for the Comets and the Trojans went with Ryan Deom. Pat Kravitz reached on an error with two outs, but Macko got a strikeout to end the top of the first. Brett Caladie led off with a single to right but Deom got the next three outs to keep it scoreless after one. Jake Mastillo drew a two out walk but Macko got another strikeout to keep the Trojans off the board. Steve Wegener led off with an infield single. After a popout, a flyout caused a double play to keep the game scoreless after two. Macko threw his first 1-2-3 inning in the third. Evan Knapp led off with a single then advanced to second on a Matt Taleroski sacrifice bunt. Knapp moved to third on a wild pitch. After a flyout, Macko brought home Knapp on a hard hit single. James Graves then reached on an error, but a groundout ended the third. Cory Wall hit a one out single, then Gary Woloszyn drew a walk. Ryan Deom would single home Wall to tie the game at one but a strikeout and a fielder's choice would keep the game tied at one. Deom threw a 1-2-3 fourth to keep the game tied. Macko threw a 1-2-3 fifth to keep the Comets in it. Matt Taleroski would hit a one out single. After a groundout, Taleroski would move to third. Macko then drew a walk. Macko's courtesy runner, Mick Bafunno would end getting caught in a pickle and Taleroski would score before Bafunno was tagged out to give the Comets a 2-1 lead after five. Pat Kravitz would hit a leadoff single, then would steal second. Kravitz would move to third on a groundout. Woloszyn would try a safety squeeze but Kravitz would be tagged out at home by catcher Steve Wegener for the second out. Deom would then single to move Woloszyn to third. The Trojans, like the Comets, tried the same play to get the runner home and almost got him at home but the throw was off and the game was tied at 2 but they would get the runner out at third for the third out. James Graves would lead off with a single, then Justin Darden would double and Graves would go to third. Tony Donato would then come in to pitch for the Trojans. After a strikeout, Curtis Tokach would then bring home Graves on an infield single to make it 3-2 Crestwood. After another strikeout, Evan Knapp would walk to load the bases. Matt Taleroski would then bring home Darden on a bases loaded walk to increase the lead to 4-2. A groundout would end the inning. Macko would get the first two batters of the inning to strikeout, but would have to come out due to the pitch count rule. Matt Trimmer would come in to get the final out for the Comets. Trimmer would only need one pitch to close it out, a ground ball to Darden to Chalk to end the inning and the Comets would advance to the District 2 Semifinals with a 4-2 victory over North Pocono.
Thoughts on the game: Well, I picked this as my upset of the 5A Bracket and I struck out. Speaking of strikeouts, Colin Macko had a great game. Striking out 9 batters and also driving in the game's first run. It was also an unusual game, with two rundown plays that resulted in runs for the Comets and the Trojans. Ryan Deom did impress me for North Pocono, he did pitch well in defeat and had two hits for the Trojans.
