Dallas gets past Pittston Area

The Patriots of Pittston Area looked to stay within a game of first place as they travel to Dallas High School to face the Mountaineers on a blustery Tuesday afternoon in the Back Mountain. The Patriots went with Chris Merithew. Dallas sent Nick Kocher to the mound. Kocher threw a 1-2-3 frame to start the game. Mike Collins and JD Barrett each drew one out walks, but Merithew would induce a grounder back to him and started the 1-6-3 double play to keep the game scoreless after one. CJ Pisack would hit a one out single but a popout and a groundout ended the Pittston Area threat. Drew Patton would hit a two out single and Christo Huntington singled for a first and second but a lineout to first ended the threat and kept the game scoreless after 2. Kocher threw a 1-2-3 third to keep the Patriots off the board. Darren Kerdesky led off with a single then Collins reached on an error and each moved one base after the throwing error. Barrett brought home Kardesky on an RBI groundout to get the Mountaineers on the board 1-0. Mike Luksic brought home Collins on an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. Kocher would follow with a single to move Luksic to second. After an infield fly, Patton brought home Luksic on an RBI single for a 3-0 lead. A strikeout would end the inning. Dylan Spurlin would lead off with a walk. Spurlin would move to second on a groundout. Tyler Jackson would bring him home on an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1. Back-to-back groundouts would end the Top of the fourth. Kerdesky drew a one out walk but a flyout and a strikeout ended the inning. John DeLucca led off with a single. After a popout, Steve Shamnoski drew a walk. Both runners moved over one base on a wild pitch. Following a flyout, Kyle O'Fier hit a single that just nicked the fielder's glove and scored DeLucca and Shamnoski to tie the game at 3. A flyout would end the Top of the fifth. Kocher hit a one out single but a flyout and a fielder's choice ended the inning with the game tied at 3. John DeLucca drew a two out walk and Kocher was taken out due to him being at the pitch limit. Josh Lydon came in to pitch for the Mountaineers. Pinch-hitter Riley Brody came in and hit a single, and was replaced by Albert Zuba as a pinch runner. A strikeout would get the Mountaineers out of the top of the sixth. Joe DeLucca came in to pitch the sixth for the Patriots. Christo Huntington drew a leadoff walk then Matt Mathers used a sacrifice bunt to move Huntington to second. Kerdesky then hit a bloop single to score Huntington to make it 4-3 Mountaineers. Kerdesky then stole second. After a flyout, Barrett drew a walk but a strikeout ended the inning. Lydon induced a grounder to Huntington who dove and tagged first for the first out. Lydon then got a strikeout and a grounder to first to finish the game 1-2-3 to give the Mountaineers a 4-3 victory over Pittston Area.

Thoughts on the game: It was an interesting game, both pitchers threw well despite getting no-decisions. Lydon threw very well for the Mountaineers in 1 and 1/3 to get the win. Darren Kerdesky had a great game, going 2 for 3, with a run scored and an RBI single that gave Dallas the lead for good. Nick Kocher also had a great game at the plate, going 2 for 3. For Pittston Area, Kyle O'Fier had a good game, driving in two runs which tied the game up.
