The Cougars came in with an outside chance of taking the division but first they would need to win out and get a lot of help. First, they needed to take down first place Crestwood. Colin Stauffer got the start for Hazleton Area. The Comets went with Matt Trimmer. Brett Caladie started off the game with a leadoff single, but Stauffer would retire the next three batters to keep the game scoreless going into the bottom of the first. Chris Heim drew a one out walk, then Livan Reinoso hit a double, moving Heim to third. His twin Dayan Reinoso drove home Heim and Livan for a 2-0 Cougar lead. A flyout and a groundout ended the inning. Stauffer would throw a 1-2-3 second to keep the 2-0 lead. James Vozar would hit a two out single but a groundout would end the inning. With one out, Matt Taleroski would strikeout but got to first on a wild pitch. Taleroski advanced to second on a groundout, then Colin Macko drove him home on a double to cut it to 2-1. James Graves would then double to move Macko to third but a flyout would end the inning. With one out, Livan Reinoso would hit a solo shot for a 3-1 Cougars lead. Dayan would get hit by a pitch and Alex Klein would draw a walk, Reinoso would be thrown out at second trying to steal. A fielder's choice would end the inning. Curtis Tokach would reach on a error to lead off the fourth. After a flyout, Steve Wegener would walk to make it first and second. After another flyout, Taleroski would walk to load the bases but Stauffer would get a strikeout to end the Comet threat. Ryan Pietryk would lead off with a single then Brian Harry would single but Pietryk would try to advance to third but Taleroski got the ball to Tokach in time for the first out. Vozar hit a single but a lineout to first would double him off for the double play. Macko led off with a walk, then Graves followed with another walk. They would both advance on a double steal. Justin Darden would bring Macko home on an RBI groundout. Back-to-back groundouts would end the top half of the fifth. Chris Heim would lead off with a single. The Comets would go to Brandon Brozena in relief. Lavan Reinoso would continue his hot day with his third hit of the day, a single. After an infield fly, Alex Klein would hit a double to score Livan Reinoso for a 4-2 Cougar lead. Back-to-back strikeouts would end the fifth. Frank DeGaetano came in to pitch for the Cougars. Pinch hitter Mick Bafunno would draw a one out walk but a flyout and a strikeout would end the inning. Brozena would throw a 1-2-3 sixth for the Comets. Macko would lead off with a walk, but DeGaetano would get the next three batters out to give the Cougars a 4-2 victory on Senior Day. The victory gave the Cougars within a game and a half of first place.
Thoughts on the game: What a game by both the Reinoso twins. Dayan Reinoso started the game off big by hitting a two RBI single in the first, then Livan Reinoso hit a home run to increase their lead back to two runs after Crestwood added a run. For Crestwood, despite their three game losing streak, they've been in every one of their games. With Valley West's losses in the last two games, Crestwood stays in first place. The division is interesting.
