Railriders prevent sweep, take down Red Sox

The Pawtucket Red Sox came into their matinee game looking for a sweep of the Railriders whereas the Railriders were looking to prevent the sweep. Pawtucket went to Henry Owens on the mound. Caleb Smith got the start for the Railriders. Tyler Wade started off with a bunt single. Wade would however get picked off trying to take second. After a strikeout, Clint Frazier would hit a deflected single but a strikeout would end the top of the first. Jantzen Witte would draw a one out walk. Witte would get picked off trying to steal second. Steve Selsky would get hit by a pitch, then Sam Travis followed with a single to right but a groundout would keep the game scoreless after one. Owens would throw a 1-2-3 second for the Red Sox. Smith answered with a 1-2-3 second of his own. Mark Payton led off with a walk then Eddy Rodriguez would hit his first home run of the season, this one was to left field for a 2-0 lead. Owens would retire the next three batters to lessen the damage. Aneury Tavarez would get hit by a pitch with one out, then Witte drew a walk. Following a strikeout, Sam Travis would double to left to score Tavarez to cut the Railriders lead to 2-1. A flyout would end the third. Rob Refsnyder would hit a one out double to left, then would steal third on the next batter. Refsnyder would score on a sacrifice fly RBI by Mason Williams for a 3-1 Railriders lead. Cito Culver would draw a walk but a groundout would end the inning. Tim Roberson would hit a two out single to center but a flyout would end the fourth. Rodriguez would draw a walk to lead off the fifth, then Wade doubled to right to move Rodriguez to third. After a strikeout and a fielder's choice at home, Ji-Man Choi would single home Wade for a 4-1 lead. A flyout would end the top half of the fifth. Smith would throw a 1-2-3 fifth for the Railriders. Chandler Shepherd would come in to pitch for Pawtucket. Mason Williams would hit a single to center. After a flyout, Mark Payton would single to move Williams to third. On the next batter, Williams would score on a wild pitch for a 5-1 lead.  Back-to-back strikeouts would end the sixth for the Railriders. Ben Heller came in to pitch the sixth for the Railriders. Allen Craig would hit a single to left with one out but back-to-back popouts would end the Pawtucket half of the sixth. Shepherd would throw a 1-2-3 seventh for the Red Sox. Heiker Meneses hit a one out double to right. A strikeout and a groundout would end the seventh. Erik Cordier would pitch the eighth for Pawtucket and would throw a 1-2-3 inning for the Red Sox. Ernesto Frieri came in to pitch the eighth for the Railriders. Sam Travis would draw a one out walk, but a flyout and a strikeout would end the eighth. Robbie Ross Jr would come in to pitch the ninth for the Red Sox. Rodriguez drew a walk with one out but back-to-back strikeouts would keep the game 5-1 Railriders. Matt Dominguez hit a leadoff double to center, then Roberson singled home Dominguez to cut the lead to 5-2. After a strikeout and a flyout, Tyler Jones came in for a save for the Railriders. Witte kept the game alive with a single to right, then Selsky walked to load the bases but Jones got a forceout at second for the third as the Railriders avoided the sweep of the Red Sox 5-1.

Thoughts on the game: Caleb Smith had a great game on the mound, giving up 3 hits, allowing only one run and striking out four. Tyler Wade had a great game at the plate, getting two hits. Eddy Rodriguez hit his first home run of the season.
