After a ten day layoff, the Comets came to Valley West's Spartan Stadium to take on Valley West in a big divisional matchup. Nate Baranski got the start for the Spartans. The Comets started James Graves. The game started with a ten pitch at-bat by Mick Bafunno and end it with a walk to lead it off. Colin Macko would reach on a fielder's choice. After a flyout, Justin Darden drew a walk but a groundout would end the Top half of the first. Richard Sott started off with a double down the left field line then Justin Vought hit a double to center to score Sott for a 1-0 Spartan lead. Dominick Bayo would get hit by a pitch, then Stephen Banas moved them over with a sacrifice bunt. Jake Packer would hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Vought for a 2-0 Valley West lead. A popout would end the inning. Baranski would throw a 1-2-3 second to keep the 2-0 Valley West lead. Graves answered from his tough first inning with a 1-2-3 second inning for the Comets. Colin Macko would reach on an infield single with two outs but a flyout would end the Top of the third. Justin Vought would hit a one out double. After a flyout, Vought was attempting to steal third but ended up going home on a single that the third basemen just missed and it was 3-0 Valley West. A fielder's choice ended the inning. Curtis Tokach hit a one out single, then Brett Caladie reached on a fielder's choice. Wyatt Kindler would bring home Caladie on a double to left to cut the lead to 3-1. A strikeout would end the Top half of the fourth. Austin Sienkiewicz drew a leadoff walk but Graves would retire the next three batters to keep it 3-1. Macko would hit a two out double to right, then Graves singled to make it first and third. Justin Darden then followed with a double to left that scored Macko to cut the lead to 3-2. A flyout would end the Crestwood threat. Sott led off with a single to center then Vought followed by drawing a walk. Graves would retire the next three batters to keep it a one run game. Pinch hitter Brandon Brozena started off the top of the sixth with an infield single. After a flyout, Kindler drew a walk and both advanced one base on a steal but a strikeout and a flyout ended the Comet threat. Matt Trimmer came in to pitch the sixth for the Comets. Zack Kobusky would reach on an error with one out but a groundout and a lineout ended the inning. Baranski would get the next two batters out and Damian Davies came in for the save for Valley West. Davies would strike out the only batter he faced as the Spartans took the victory 3-2 over Crestwood.
Thoughts on the game: Valley West started off hot with Sott and Vought doubling to start of the bottom of the first. Those doubles proved huge as they would both score. Vought had a great game at the plate, going 2 for 2 with 2 doubles and an RBI and two runs scored. Both pitchers had tough starts to the game but they both seemed to settle down afterwards. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we were to see these teams a third time this season.
