Nowak dominates as Coughlin takes down Crestwood

The Comets looked to get back on track as they hosted Coughlin at the Mountain Top American Legion. Coughlin was looking to avenge an early season loss to Crestwood. The Crusaders went to Chase Nowak on the mound. The Comets went with Colin Macko. Macko would start the top of the first with a 1-2-3 frame. Brett Caladie hit a leadoff single but Nowak would strike out the next three batters to keep the game scoreless. Steve Dressler drew a one out walk. After a groundout, George Oko drew another walk but a strikeout would get the Comets out of the inning. Brandon Brozena would draw a one out walk. He would steal second and reach third on a throwing error. Steve Wegener would draw a walk but his courtesy runner would get thrown out trying to steal second, but a strikeout would end the inning, keeping it scoreless. Taylor Chronowski would hit a leadoff to start the second, would advance to second on a wild pitch. After back-to-back strikeouts, Chase Nowak would bring home Chronowski for a 1-0 Coughlin lead. A groundout would end the top of the third. Macko would hit a two out single but Nowak would throw another strikeout to keep the 1-0 Crusader lead. Macko would throw a 1-2-3 fourth for the Comets. Justin Darden would lead off with a double to left, then Curtis Tokach would single to right to score Darden to tie the game at 1. After a forceout, the runner at first would get picked off for the second out and that loomed big as Steve Wegener doubled but a strikeout would end the inning. Chronowski would hit a one out single then advanced to second on a errant catcher pickoff. Eric Christian would hit a single to right and Wyatt Kindler threw home to get Chronowski at the plate for the second out. A groundout would end the top of the fifth tied. Caladie would hit a one out double. After a strikeout, James Graves singled to move Caladie to third but Eric Christian would make an over the shoulder grab for the third out to keep the game tied. Nowak drew a leadoff walk, then Leroy Fettig was hit by a pitch. Jason Rodriguez would come in to pinch run for Fettig. After a 2-2 count on Dressler, the Comets went to Connor Kaminski in relief. Dressler would draw a walk to load the bases. Jacob Lupas would give the Crusaders the lead with an RBI single that scored Nowak for a 2-1 lead. Rodriguez would score on a passed ball for a 3-1 lead. After a strikeout, Tony Egidio hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Dressler for the 4-1 Crusader lead. Chronowski drew a walk and the Comets went to Corey Chalk in relief. Christian would get hit by a pitch but he would get a lineout to end the top of the sixth. Brandon Brozena would hit a one out single but a strikeout and a groundout would end the sixth. Chalk would throw a 1-2-3 seventh to give the Comets a chance in the bottom of the seventh. Caladie drew a one out walk then the Comets re-entered Macko to hit and he hit a single to make it first and second with one out but a strikeout and a popout would end the game as the Crusaders take the victory 4-1 over Crestwood.

Thoughts on the game: Chase Nowak was incredible today, striking out ten and only walking two. The Crusaders struck hard in the sixth but you could argue the momentum came in the bottom of the fifth when Eric Christian made an over the shoulder catch to prevent the Comets from scoring two runs. The Comets were able to get some extra base hits today but couldn't seem to stream them together.
