Dallas defeats Crestwood in dramatic fashion
The Dallas Mountaineers and the Crestwood Comets traveled to King's College for their District 2 5A Semifinal matchup. The Mountaineers are looking to defeat the Comets for the third straight game and get to the Mohegan Sun Arena. The Comets are looking to play spoiler and get their first win of the season against Dallas. Who would come out on top and get to the District Final at the Arena? Let's find out!
With the game tied at 2 early in the first quarter, The Mountaineers' Jay Bittner would score six straight points to take a 8-2 lead and would score 11 points during the quarter as Dallas would lead 15-7 at the end of the first quarter. With the Mountaineers leading by seven, the Comets would get a bucket by Camden Boris and a three by Sean Murphy would cut the Dallas lead to two. The Mountaineers would increase their lead to five as the final seconds were ticking down and Boris would knock down a three as the Comets would trail by 24-22 at halftime.
The Comets would tie the game at 24 when Sean Murphy drove to the basket and was fouled but would miss the free throw but the Comets would get the offensive rebound and would capitalize with a Mike Palmeiro basket for Crestwood's first lead of the game. Dallas would tie the game up with a pair of Jay Bittner free throws and Joey Parsons would get a basket for a 28-26 lead. On the next Crestwood possession, Ryan Petrosky would tie the game up and Evan Knapp would get a three point play for a 31-28 but Bittner would get another three to tie the game up. Crestwood would go on a 7-0 run for a 38-31 lead. After a Dallas basket, Crestwood would go for the last shot. Boris would miss the shot but Knapp would get the putback for a 40-33 lead at the end of the third quarter. Bittner and Parsons would hit back-to-back threes to cut the Comets lead to one. Crestwood would go on a 6-0 run to increase the lead back to seven. With the Comets lead at six, Alex Charlton and Bittner hit back-to-back threes to tie the game at 48 but Dallas would foul Murphy and would go to the line and hit both free throws for a 50-48. Jay Bittner would tie the game at 50 on a basket and Crestwood would not be able to score on their next possession and Dallas would get the ball with a minute to play. With the time winding down, Charlton would take a shot and miss and Strickland would get the rebound and miss but Matt Mathers would get a putback as time expired and the Dallas Mountaineers would advance to the 5A District Championship with a 52-50 victory over the Crestwood Comets.
Thoughts on the game: All I can say is, what an amazing game to be at. Matt Mathers may only have scored two points on the night, but they were the biggest two points of the game. For the Mountaineers, Jay Bittner had a really good game, scoring 27 points and forcing several turnovers. For Crestwood, Sean Murphy had a great game with 14 points, as well as Camden Boris with 13 points. The Comets played one of their best games all season despite the loss tonight. This game could have really gone either way, it's really a shame that one of these teams had to go home with their season ending.
