Dallas stays unbeaten with victory over Hazleton Area
The Hazleton Area Cougars traveled to Dallas to take on the Mountaineers. The Cougars are looking to get to 2-1 after falling to Valley West last week. The Mountaineers are hoping to stay undefeated after knocking off fellow 4A opponents Tunkhannock and Crestwood. Who would come out on top in this matchup? Let's get to it!
The Mountaineers would start with the ball and on the first play, Leonard Kelley would go for 12 yards but couldn't get another and would be forced to punt. The Cougars would go to work on their first drive and Damon Horton would go for 13 yards on the first play and then gain three on second and 2 but the drive would stall out and the Cougars would punt. The Mountaineers would only need two plays as Michael Starbuck would go to Matt Maransky for a 46 yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 Dallas lead with 6:53 left in the first quarter. Sparky Wolk would go to Horton for 21 yards on second and 7. On a second and 6, Wolk would find David Smith for 10 yards. They would eventually score from one yard out by Horton on fourth and goal to tie the game at 7 with 2:53 remaining in the first. First play of the Mountaineers' next possession, Starbuck would find Luke DelGaudio for a 56 yard touchdown and a 14-7 Dallas lead. The Cougars would drive down the field as the first quarter came to an end. Horton would go in from two yards out and his second touchdown of the game to tie the game at 14 with 10:55 remaining in the second quarter. The next Dallas Possession would end with a fumble recovered by the Cougars' Matt Fisher. The Cougars would go for it on fourth and goal and Wolk would be sacked by Josh Balara and the Mountaineers would take over. Dallas would face a third and 4 and Starbuck would run for five yards, then Kelley would go for 29 to the Cougars 23 yard line. Then would go for 11 yards on the next play. On second and 9, Kelley would finish the drive with an 11 yard touchdown run and a 21-14 Mountaineer lead with 6:20 to go in the second quarter. The next Cougars drive would end in a punt. The Mountaineers looked to have a long touchdown pass but a holding penalty would negate the penalty. On a third and 3, Kelley would go for six. On a third and 10 at their own 49, Starbuck would find DelGaudio for 25 yards to the Cougars 26 yard line. After an incompletion, Kelley would go for a 26 yard touchdown run, his second on the game for a 28-14 Dallas lead with 1:06 to go in the second quarter. The Cougars would take over after a great return by Horton to the Dallas 36 yard line. The Cougars would face a fourth and 8 and Wolk would find Smith for 11. After an incompletion, Wolk would find Smith again for 22 yards to the one yard line. Horton would go in for his third touchdown of the game with a one yard touchdown to cut the Dallas lead to 28-21 as we headed to halftime.
The Cougars would get the ball to start the second half and a sack would force the Cougars to punt. The first Mountaineers drive would end with an eight yard touchdown run by Kelley for his third touchdown of the game for a 35-21 Dallas lead. The Cougars would go four and out. The Mountaineers would take over and would drive down the field and would end on a three yard touchdown run by Kelley for his fourth touchdown of the game and a 42-21 lead with 10 seconds to go in the third. Early in the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers' Mike Anderson would sack Wolk in the end zone for a safety and a 44-21 lead. Dallas would punt on their next possession. The Cougars would try to get back into the game and would drive all the way to the Dallas 35 yard line but a sack and a run stuffed by the Mountaineers on fourth down would seal the victory for Dallas as they would improve to 3-0 with a 44-21 home victory over Hazleton Area.
Thoughts on the game: It was a really fun first half with back and forth action on both sides. The Dallas offense was working really well with Leonard Kelley scoring four rushing touchdowns and Michael Starbuck had a good game, throwing two long touchdowns to Matt Maransky and to Luke DelGaudio. For Hazleton Area, Damon Horton had a really good game, scoring three touchdowns on the game.
