Ravens Dominant Second Half propels them over Steelers

The Baltimore Ravens traveled to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers at Heinz Field. The Ravens are coming off a win last week at home over the Denver Broncos. The Steelers got their first win of the season on Monday night by beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road. The Steelers are looking to right the ship after tying their first game of the season and losing to Kansas City in their first two games. The Ravens come in at 2-1 and are hoping to stay in first place of the AFC North. Who would come out on top in the AFC North rivalry game? Let's Find Out!
 The Ravens would start with the ball and would go eight plays that would end with Joe Flacco going to John Brown for a 33 yard touchdown and a 7-0 Baltimore lead. The first Steelers' drive would end with a fumble recovered by the Ravens' Jefferson that looked like it would go for a touchdown but after further review, Jefferson was ruled down by contact. The Ravens would capitalize after the fumble and four plays later, Flacco would go to Alex Collins for a three yard touchdown and a 14-0 Ravens lead. After the Ravens and Steelers would trade three and outs, Pittsburgh would go 12 plays that would end on a 34 yard field goal by Chris Boswell to put the Steelers on the board. First play of the Ravens possession, Flacco would go to John Brown for 71 yards to the Pittsburgh 13 yard line. However, the Ravens would be unable to score as they would fumble and the Steelers' Edmunds would recover. The Steelers would go on a 14 play drive that would end in a Boswell 39 yard field goal for 14-6 Ravens lead. Baltimore's next possession would end in a punt. The Steelers would go on a quick five play drive that would end with Ben Rothlisberger going to Antonio Brown for a 26 yard touchdown and Rothlisberger would go to James Conner for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14.
 The game would stay tied at 14 until late in the third quarter when the Ravens would go on a 12 play drive that would end with a 47 yard field goal by Justin Tucker to make it 17-14 with 4:03 to go in the third quarter. The Steelers would punt on their next possession and the Ravens would take over as the third quarter would come to an end. The Ravens would get another field goal to make it 20-14 with 11:42 left in the game. After another Steelers punt, the Ravens would get yet another field goal to make it 23-14. The Steelers' next possession would end in an interception and another Justin Tucker field goal would make it 26-14 to make the game out of reach and the Ravens would take the victory in Pittsburgh 26-14.

Playoffs Looming

As we hit the month of October, the playoff races are going to start to become a factor. Either teams pushing for positioning or teams just trying to make the postseason. As a reminder, Single-A only gets two and it looks as though Old Forge and Lackawanna Trail are on pace for a collision course with each other. In Double-A, four of five teams make the playoffs and currently, Mid Valley and Carbondale are competing for the last spot. In 3A, eight out of nine teams make the postseason and it looks like the field is set as Holy Redeemer is currently 0-6. Yes, a bunch of 1-5 teams have a chance to make the postseason. In 4A, possibly the biggest field in District 2, eight out of 13 teams make the postseason. Honesdale is holding onto the 8th spot with Abington Heights and Tunkhannock on the outside looking in. 5A is the most unusual. District 2 is in a subregional with District 11 and 4 of 6 teams make the postseason. Currently, Valley West and Wallenpaupack would be in the Subregional if the regular season ended today. In 6A, all four teams make the playoffs. All the teams are currently playing for positioning. With all that being said, here are the scores from this past weekend.

Rams take high-scoring game with Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings traveled to Los Angeles to take on the Rams. The Vikings are coming off a disappointing loss at home to the Bills. The Rams are 3-0 on the early season and knocked off the Chargers last week. Both teams are looking to get back into the playoffs after making it last season. Who would come out on top in this NFC matchup? Let's get to it!
 The Vikings would start with the ball and go on a 13 play drive that would end with Kirk Cousins going to Aldrick Robinson for a 16 yard touchdown for a 7-0 Minnesota lead. The Rams would answer on their first drive with a 12 play drive as Jared Goff would find Todd Gurley for an eight yard touchdown. The third drive of the game would get into the second quarter and Minnesota would go 12 plays and end with a 37 yard field goal by Dan Bailey for a 10-7 Vikings lead. It wouldn't take long for the Rams to take the lead as it would take two plays and Jared Goff would find Cooper Kupp for a 70 yard touchdown pass for a 14-10 Rams lead. Minnesota on their next drive would find Stefon Diggs for a 34 yard gain and then Kyle Rudolph for a 24 yard completion. Cousins would find Robinson in the end zone for the second time today for the 17-14 Vikings lead. The Rams and Vikings would each go three and out. The Rams would go on a four play drive that would end with Goff going to Kupp for their second touchdown of the game for a 21-17 Rams. The Vikings' next drive would end with a punt. The Rams would take two plays as Goff would find Brandin Cooks for a 47 yard touchdown and a 28-17 Rams lead and the Vikings would drive down the field and kick a 39 yard field goal as the Vikings would trail 28-20 at halftime.
 The Rams would get the ball to start the second half and would try a fake field goal and would fail. The Vikings drive would end with a punt. The Rams next possession would end with a 34 yard field goal by Sam Ficken for a 31-20 Rams lead. The Vikings would answer with a five play drive that ended with Cousins going to Andre Thielen for a 45 yard touchdown pass and the two-point conversion would make it 31-28 in favor of the Rams. The Rams would answer with a five play drive of their own as Goff would go to Robert Woods for a 31 yard touchdown for a 38-28 lead. As we started the fourth quarter, the Vikings drive would end with a punt. The Rams would go 11 plays but the drive would end with no points as the field goal would miss. The Vikings would go nine plays and get a 40 yard field goal by Dan Bailey to cut the lead to 38-31 with 3:50 to go. The Rams would go three and out and the Vikings would take over with 2:20 to go. The Vikings would face a third and 9 and Cousins would find Treadwell for 13 yards, but on the next play, the Vikings would fumble and the Rams would recover. The Rams would get one first down as LA would take the victory 38-31.

End of September

As we hit the end of September, we are treated to some pretty good college football games on Saturday and a few good HS games in District 2. At Crispin Field, it's a rematch of the 4A District Championship game between Berwick and Valley View. In college football, Ohio State travels to Happy Valley to take on Penn State and Stanford goes to South Bend to take on Notre Dame. That is just a sample of the games this week. Upset Season Part 2

Much like what happened in College Football, upsets happened in the NFL this weekend. Not many expected for Buffalo to beat Minnesota. The Browns won for the first time since Christmas Eve of 2016! The Lions knocked off the Patriots on Sunday night. I know it's Week 3 but some of the upsets are really surprising after watching the first two weeks of the season. Upset Season

With this week's HS and College Football matchups in the books, we saw some interesting games and a huge upset this weekend with Old Dominion who came in with zero wins, knocked off Virginia Tech. A few other upsets would be Texas beating TCU and Kentucky beating Mississppi State. Next week looks to have to some big games in both High School and College Football with Ohio State taking on Penn State. Berwick hosting Valley View in a rematch of last year's 4A District Championship in which Valley View won. Wallenpaupack travels to Valley West in a rematch of last year's 5A Championship game and it could loom big for the playoff picture in 5A. Halfway to Home

After this week, we are at the halfway point of the 2018 High School Football season. Teams are starting to emerge. Some were expected and a few are either surprising or disappointing depending on your perspective. With all that being said, here are the previews for HS Football, College Football and the NFL.

Missing Kicks

The second week of the NFL season has come to a close. Something I've noticed more of this season more than I have in several years. Kickers seem to be missing more kicks this year. As I'm talking about this, two kickers have been replaced in Minnesota and Cleveland. Both missed kicks in overtime that caused their team to tie their opponent. With all that being said, here is what went down in Week 2.

Bears rebound to take down Seattle

The Seattle Seahawks traveled to Chicago to take on the Bears. The Seahawks are coming off a tough loss to Denver last week. The Bears are coming off a tough loss on the road to rival Green Bay. Both teams are coming in hoping to avoid 0-2 starts but who would come out on top in this NFC crossover game? Let's find out!
 The Seahawks would start with the ball and it would end in a punt. The Bears would their first possession and would go 96 yards on ten plays as Mitch Trubisky went to Trey Burton for a three yard touchdown pass. The Seahawks next drive would end in a punt. The Bears would drive all the way to the Seahawks 45 yard line but would be forced to punt. The Seahawks would go three and out. Trubisky would be intercepted by Shaquille Griffin on the first play of the Bears drive. The Seahawks couldn't capitalize as they went three and out. The Bears' next drive would end with another interception by Shaquille Griffin. It would result in another three and out for the Seahawks. The Bears would go on a long 12 play drive that would end with a 25 yard field goal by Cody Parkey for a 10-0 Bears lead with 1:07 left in the second quarter. The Seahawks would get the ball and get in range for a 56 yard field goal by Sebastian Janikowski and would make it as we headed to halftime with the Bears leading 10-3.
 Both teams would trade punts each until late in the third quarter when the Bears would drive down the field at the end of the third quarter and on the second play of the fourth, Trubisky would find Anthony Miller for a 10 yard touchdown to make it a 17-3 Bears lead. The Seahawks would get on the board as Seattle would go on a ten play drive that would result in Russell Wilson going to Tyler Lockett for a 19 yard touchdown to cut the lead to 17-10. The Bears would go three and out. It looked like the Seahawks would get the momentum but Wilson would be intercepted by Prince Amukamara and returned 49 yards for a touchdown and a 24-10 Bears lead. The Seahawks' next drive would end in a fumble recovered by Chicago. The Bears would go three and out after the fumble and the Seahawks would go 99 yards on 11 plays that would end with Wilson going to Will Disssly for a two yard touchdown to cut the lead to 24-17 with 14 seconds to go. The Seahawks would need to recover the onside kick but the ball would be covered by Chicago and the Bears would take down the Seahawks to go to 1-1 on the season.

Cowboys survive late Giants surge

The Dallas Cowboys hosted the New York Giants on Sunday night. It's a matchup of highly touted running backs. Giants rookie RB Saquon Barkley had a great debut last week against the Jaguars. Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott is in his third season and is one of the top RBs in the NFL. Who will come out on top in this matchup between NFC East rivals? Let's find out!
 The Cowboys would start with the ball and it would take them three plays as Dak Prescott would find Tavon Austin for a 64 yard touchdown and a 7-0 Dallas lead. The Giants first drive would end in a punt. The Cowboys would go eight plays and end with a Brett Maher 37 yard field goal for a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. The rest of the half would result in both teams trading punts til the end of the half when Prescott took a knee to go to the half.
 The Giants would start with the ball in the second half and it would end with a fumble recovered by the Cowboys. Dallas would capitalize with a 29 yard field goal by Maher for 13-0 lead. The Giants would get on the board with an 11 play drive that ended with a Aldrick Rosas 28 yard field goal to cut the lead to 13-3. After the Cowboys and Giants traded three and outs, the Cowboys would go on a 14 play drive that ended with a six yard touchdown run by Ezekiel Elliott for a 20-3 Cowboys lead with 5:45 to go in the game. The Giants wouldn't quit however as they would go on a 11 play drive that would end with Eli Manning going to Evan Engram for an 18 yard touchdown to make it 20-10. The Giants would try for an onside kick and would get it and would go on an eight play drive and would end with a 38 yard field goal by Rosas to cut the deficit to 20-13. The Giants would have to try another onside kick and this time the Cowboys would get it and they would take a knee as Dallas would take their home opener with a 20-13 victory over the New York Giants.

Almost to Halfway

Hard to believe that we're close to the halfway point of the HS Football season. Soon enough, the end of summer will be here and the days will get colder. I'd say the days will be getting shorter but that's been happening since June. With all that being said, here is what happened this week in HS and College Football.

Mercyhurst QB Doug Altavilla threw for 146 yards and a touchdown and also added a rushing touchdown and Garrett Owens ran for 87 yards on the ground as Mercyhurst knocked off Bloomsburg. Huskies RB Alex Gooden ran for 99 yards and a touchdown.

Berwick runs all over Valley West

The Berwick Bulldogs traveled to Spartan Stadium as they took on the Wyoming Valley West Spartans. Both teams come in undefeated in this early season. It's one of the biggest rivalries in the Wyoming Valley Conference. Who would come out on top in this highly touted matchup? Let's find out!
 The Spartans would start with the ball and on third and 8, Jake Shusta would go to Nah-Syr Gardner for 21 yards to their own 43 yard line. However, they would be unable to move the chains again and would be forced to punt. The Bulldogs would get the ball for the first time and would face a fourth and 2 at their own 47. The Spartans expected punt but the Bulldogs didn't use punt formation and Owen Shoemaker would go for 32 yards. Two plays later, Blake Maurer would go in for a 21 yard touchdown and a 7-0 Berwick lead. First play of Valley West's next possession, Carson Canavan would go for 17. They would face a third and 5 and Shusta's pass would be complete but would be short of the first down. However, a facemask penalty on Berwick would give the Spartans a first down. They would face a fourth and 7 and Shusta's pass would fall incomplete. Second play of the Berwick drive, they would fumble and Valley West would recover at the Berwick 32 yard line. On second and 12, Canavan would go for 20 to the Berwick 14 yard line. The first quarter would come to an end with Valley West facing a fourth and 1 at the Berwick 4 yard line. First play of the quarter, Shusta would get the first down. On second and goal at the 2, Canavan would go in from two yards out to tie the game at 7. It would take three plays for Berwick to retake the lead as Owen Shoemaker would go 49 yards for a touchdown and the 14-7 lead. The Spartans would try and answer and start with Shusta finding Gardner for 23. On third and 4, Shusta would find Gardner again for 16 and on the next play, Shusta would find Jorge Pina for a 24 yard touchdown to tie the game at 14. On the ensuing kickoff, Aidan Mason would go 83 yards on the kickoff for the score and a 20-14 Bulldogs lead. The Spartans would be forced to punt on their next possession. However, the Spartans would get the ball right back as the Bulldogs would fumble and Valley West would recover at the Berwick 10 for a first and goal and it would end with a 31 yard field goal by Adam Sivak to cut the Bulldogs lead to 20-17 with 3:20 remaining in the second quarter. The Bulldogs would get a good kick return and have it at the Spartans 20. Four plays later, Shoemaker would have his second touchdown of the night as we go in from four yards out and a 27-17 lead and that would be the score at halftime.
 Berwick would take no time in scoring to start the second half as it would take four plays and Shoemaker would go from 13 yards out for his third score of the game and a 34-17 lead. Valley West's possession would end with an interception by Teagan Wilk. The Bulldogs would be unable to capitalize as the series would end with an interception by Brendan Woods and returned to their own 5 yard line. That series would end in a three and out. The Bulldogs would have good field position but would be unable to score as the field goal attempt would be short. The Spartans possession would end with Wilk intercepting his second pass of the game. Wilk would end the next Berwick drive with a 15 yard touchdown and a 40-17 Berwick lead. Valley West would end up scoring late in the game as Darius Redguard would have a 30 yard touchdown run but the Bulldogs would take the victory and go to 4-0 with a 40-24 victory at Valley West.

Thoughts on the game: Berwick looked really good from the start. They have some really good players on both sides of the ball. Teagan Wilk looked really good. He had two interceptions and also had a touchdown run. Owen Shoemaker was impressive with three touchdown runs. As usual, expect Berwick to go deep into the playoffs.

Bengals' hot start propels victory over Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens traveled to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals on Thursday night. The Ravens are coming off a blowout victory over the Buffalo Bills. The Bengals are coming off a close victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Who would come out on top in this matchup of AFC North rivals? Let's find out!
 The Ravens and Bengals first possession of the game ended in three and outs. On the Ravens next possession, Joe Flacco would be intercepted by Jessie Bates and returned to the Baltimore 16 yard line. On the next play, it looked like the Ravens would get an interception on the play but upon further review, the pass would ruled incomplete. On third and 6, Andy Dalton's pass would fall incomplete but pass interference on Ravens would make it first and goal at the one. On second and goal at the four, Dalton would find AJ Green for the touchdown and a 7-0 Cincinnati lead. The Ravens would punt on their next drive. The Bengals would go five plays that would end in a 32 yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Green for the second time and a 14-0 Bengals lead. The next drive would result in a three and out once again for the Ravens. As we entered the second, the Bengals would go 12 plays and Dalton would find Green for their third straight touchdown early second quarter. The Ravens would go ten plays and Allen would go in for a one yard touchdown that would cut the lead to 21-7. The Bengals would answer with a 12 play drive that ended with Dalton going to Tyler Boyd for a 14 yard touchdown and a 28-7 Bengals lead. The next Ravens possession would end on a turnover on downs. The Bengals would go three and out and would give the Ravens the ball with 1:08 to go in the second quarter. On second and 10, Joe Flacco would go to Alex Collins to the Ravens 41 yard line for 22 yards. Flacco would find Michael Crabtree for 17 yards on the next play. Next play, Flacco would find Mark Andrews for 11. A pass interference on the Ravens on the next play would move the ball to the one yard line and on third and goal, Flacco would find Andrews for a one yard touchdown and cut the Bengals lead to 28-14 as we head to halftime.
 The Bengals would start with the ball and would punt on the possession. The Ravens would only need five plays that would end with a 55 yard field goal to cut the lead to 28-17 in favor of the Bengals. Both teams would trade punts and turnovers during the third quarter and the Ravens would take over early fourth quarter. The drive would go 12 plays and end with Flacco going to John Brown for a 21 yard touchdown. The two point coversion would fail and it would be 28-23. The Bengals would strike back with a 10 play drive ended with a Randy Bullock 28 yard field goal to make it an eight point game with 3:03 to go. The Ravens would face a third and 10 and Flacco would be sacked and would fumble and recovered by Dre Kirkpatrick. The Bengals would get a 40 yard field goal and make it 34-23 with 2:29 to go. The Ravens would get the ball back with no timeouts left but would run out of time before they could score as the Bengals would take down the Ravens 34-23.

Rainy Weather

There's been quite a bit of wet weather this week. During baseball season, I'd be angry cause games wouldn't be able to be played. During football season, most games will be played in most conditions with the exception of thunder and lightning or natural disasters. There are a few college football games that have either been cancelled or postponed due to Hurricane Florence.
