Well the first full week of High School Baseball and Softball didn't start off as planned. On Monday, some places ended up with accumulating snow on their fields. Granted most of it melted Monday afternoon but then we got two straight days of rain and rained most of the slate of games.
There were a few games played this week. Most of which were in the WVC and only game was played in the Lackawanna League for baseball. Softball had a couple games played this week. So with all this being said, here is what went down this past week in baseball and softball.
-Holy Redeemer was one of three baseball teams that were able to play both their games this week. The 3A State Runner-Up are 0-2. Falling to Hanover Area 7-6 at PNC Field and lost to Wyoming Seminary 7-4 on the road. The Royals had to replace several players from a year ago and replaced their starting shortstop, Tucker Ell, who is out for the season with an injury suffered during basketball season.
-The other team that played both their games this week is the Berwick Bulldogs. They knocked off Nanticoke 1-0 in eight innings and also knocked off Tunkhannock 7-5. The last team would be Tunkhannock who went 1-1 by beating Wyoming Area 2-1 on Thursday.
-Of the softball teams, only four WVC softball teams played both of their games. One of which has a turf field in Wyoming Seminary. The other two are Hazleton Area and Tunkhannock. Both those teams played in the State Final a year ago.
-Wyoming Seminary starts their season at 2-0 with a 6-5 victory and an 8-0 victory over MMI. In the game vs MMI, sophomore pitcher Delaney Romanchik threw a perfect game with 14 strikeouts. MMI also fell to 0-2 as they fell to Holy Redeemer.
-Hazleton Area also starts their season 2-0 with a 15-1 victory over Coughlin and an 8-5 win over Tunkhannock in a battle of state runner-ups. Tunkhannock also knocked off Berwick 2-1 to go to 1-1 on the season.
-Only one baseball game was played in the Lackawanna League this week. It would be a 10-0 Montrose victory over Lackawanna Trail in five innings. Jerome Washo went four innings and struck out four. Meteors catcher Keith Ely went 1 for 2 with a double, two RBIs, and three runs scored.
-Three Lackawanna League softball games were played this past week. Abington Heights knocked off Scranton Prep 10-9. Montrose beating Lackawanna Trail 9-2. West Scranton defeating Delaware Valley in a high-scoring affair 14-10.
Well, that will do it with this weekly article, stay tuned for several games this week on the blog as hopefully the weather gets better.
