Second half surge propel Titans over Kansas City
The Tennessee Titans traveled to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City to take on the Chiefs in this AFC Wild Card game. The Titans are in the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and are led by QB Marcus Mariota. The Chiefs took the AFC West title for the second straight year and are led by QB Alex Smith and a fellow tandem of RBs in Kareem Hunt and Charcandrick West. Who would come out on top in this Saturday afternoon Wild Card matchup? Let's get to it! The Chiefs and Titans would trade punts to start the game. The Chiefs' second drive would go six plays and ended with a one yard touchdown run by Kareem Hunt for a 7-0 Kansas City lead. The Titans would go three and out on their next drive, then the Chiefs would score once again on a five play drive ending with Alex Smith going to Travis Kelce for a 13 yard touchdown for a 14-0 Kansas City lead. The Titans and Chiefs would trade off punt on their next drives. The Titans would drive all the way to the Chiefs 21 yard line but Mariota's pass would be intercepted by Marcus Peters. The Chiefs wouldn't be able to capitalize and would punt the football back to the Titans. The Titans would get on the board with an eight play drive ending with a 49 yard field goal as we go to the two-minute warning with the score being 14-3 in favor of the Chiefs. The Chiefs would go on a nine play drive that would end with Smith going to Demarcus Robinson for a 14 yard touchdown and a 21-3 Chiefs lead at as go to halftime. The Titans would start with the ball in the second half and they would go on a 15 play drive ending with Marcus Mariota's pass being tipped and caught by himself for a six yard touchdown to cut the lead to 21-10. The Chiefs would go three and out initially but the Titans would muff the punt and the Chiefs would recover. The Chiefs would go for a Harrison Butker 48 yard field goal and he would hit the left upright and it would be no good. The Titans would go on a six play drive ending with Derrick Henry would go 35 yards for a touchdown and the two point conversion would fail to make it 21-16. The Chiefs would punt on their next possession. The Titans would have a third and 3 and Mariota would find Delanie Walker for nine yards and a first down. The Titans would face another third down and Mariota would go 17 yards to the Chiefs 45 yard line and a holding penalty on the Chiefs would move the ball to the Chiefs 40 yard line. The Titans had yet another third down and Mariota would find Smith for 10 yards to the Chiefs 22 yard line. On second and 10, Mariota would find Eric Decker for a 22 yard touchdown and a 22-21 Titans lead. Smith would find Harris for 13 yards to the Chiefs 40 yard line. The Chiefs would face a third and 4 and Smith would find Harris for nine yards to the Titans 45 yard line. The Chiefs would face a fourth and 9 at the Titans 44 yard line and Smith's pass would fall incomplete and the Titans would take over with 2:09 remaining. Henry would go for 12 yards as we headed to the two minute warning. Henry would get the ball to start the drive and looked like he fumbled and recovered by the Chiefs' Derrick Johnson for a 56 yard touchdown but he would be ruled down by contact upon review. The Titans would face a third and 10 with 1:53 left and Henry would go for 22 yards to clinch the game and the Titans beat the Chiefs to advance to the AFC Divisional Playoff game next week.
