Comets pull away in fourth quarter to top Meyers

The Meyers Mohawks traveled to Mountain Top to take on the Crestwood Comets. The Mohawks are currently tied for first place in Division 2 and are hoping to stay there with a win on the road. The Comets are hoping to stay within the top three in the District 2 5A Playoffs. Who would come out on top in this WVC Crossover matchup? Let's find out! Mohawks freshman Cole Walker started the scoring with a three pointer and then Mike Palmeiro got the Comets on the board with a basket. It would continue to be that score for a while until Sean Murphy hit a three pointer to give Crestwood a 5-3 lead. Back-to-back baskets by Kendall Brewster and Walker would give Meyers a 7-5 lead but then Camden Boris would hit a three pointer and Adam Gegaris would hit 1 of 2 free throws to give the Comets a 9-7 lead. However, before the end of the quarter, Juwane Buckner would hit a jumper at the buzzer to tie the game at nine. The Comets would start the quarter on a 8-0 run thanks to two three point shots by Boris and a basket by Evan Knapp. The Comets lead would go as high as nine thanks to freshman Ryan Petrosky hitting a three pointer. The Mohawks would go quietly however as freshman Eddie Berrios scored six points off the bench in the quarter and Buckner would hit three pointer to cut the lead to 21-20 as we headed to halftime. Early in the third quarter, Najese Hood would tie the game at 21 after hitting one of two free throws. It would be short lived however as Boris would hit a three pointer to give the Comets a 24-21 lead. After Hood made it a one point game, Petrosky would go for a three point play. Both Crestwood and Meyers would trade blow for blow as we head to the end of the third quarter with Crestwood leading 33-31 over the Mohawks. Murphy would score five straight points to start the fourth and make it a seven point lead for Crestwood, then Petrosky would steal and go cross court for a layup for a nine point lead. The Mohawks would only be able to cut the lead to six after Hood hit a basket and hit one of two free throws. Boris and Palmeiro would hit back-to-back baskets to increase the lead to make it a ten point game. A Hood basket would make it an eight point game but a foul would be called and then a technical foul would be called, all on Meyers. Petrosky would hit all four free throws to increase the lead to 48-36 as the Comets took the victory with 50-36 win over Meyers.

Thoughts on the game: It was a pretty close game until the fourth quarter. For the Comets, Ryan Petrosky played excellent. He scored 16 points along side Camden Boris who also added 16. For the Mohawks, I was impressed by Juwane Buckner who had 11 points as well as Najese Hood. All in all, it was a pretty interesting game by two very young and talented team.
