Railriders take down Mud Hens

The Railriders hosted Championship Night on Friday night. They recognized their 2016 National Championship team. The Toledo Mud Hens came to town for a three game set. Brady Lail got the start for the Railriders. Anibal Sanchez started for the Tigers. Lail threw a 1-2-3 top of the first for the Railriders. Tyler Wade hit a leadoff homer to right to give the Railriders a 1-0 lead. After a groundout and a strikeout, Tyler Austin hit a single to left but a groundout would end the inning. Steven Moya hit a one out single to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Bryan Holaday would reach on an error but a popout and a flyout would end the Mud Hens threat. Mason Williams would hit a one out single to center. After a strikeout, Williams would steal second then he would score on a Cito Culver single to make it a 2-0 Railriders lead. Tyler Wade would then draw a walk but a strikeout would end the inning. Matt den Dekker would hit a leadoff double to right then Jason Krizan would follow with a double to right to score den Dekker to make it 2-1 Railriders. After a groundout, Efren Navarro would hit a double to right to score Krizan to tie the game at 2. Michael Almanzar would follow with a home run to left field to give the Mud Hens a 4-2 lead. After a flyout, Bryan Holaday walked, but a flyout ended the top of the third. Sanchez threw a 1-2-3 third inning for the Mud Hens. Lail threw a 1-2-3 fourth inning for the Railriders. Wilkin Castillo would hit a two out double to left, then Cito Culver would bring home Castillo on a triple to right to cut the lead to 4-3 in favor of the Mud Hens. A flyout would end the inning. Efren Navarro drew a one out walk. After a groundout, Steve Moya would double to left to score Navarro to increase the lead to 5-3. A groundout would end the Top of the fifth. Dustin Fowler hit a leadoff double to right. Victor Alcantara came into the game to pitch in relief for the Mud Hens. Gleyber Torres followed with an infield single. They moved over one base after a groundout. A wild pitch would score Fowler to cut it back to a one run game. Clint Frazier would tie the game at 5 on a single to left. Donovan Solano then followed with a single to left to score Frazier to give the Railriders a 6-5 lead. Solano advanced to third on a wild pitch. Solano would score on a sacrifice fly to center by Mason Williams to make it 7-5 Railriders. Castillo would get hit by a pitch then a strikeout ended the inning. Matt den Dekker drew a two out walk, then the Railriders brought in Tyler Webb in relief. Krizan drew a walk but a ground out ended the top of the sixth. Wade would hit a single to center to lead off the bottom of the sixth. After a flyout, Torres drew a walk. Alcantara would get a double play to end the sixth. Michael Almanzar hit a one out single to left. After a strikeout, Bryan Holaday to right but Webb would get a flyout to get to the seventh inning stretch. After Alcantara got the first two outs, the Mud Hens went to Kyle Ryan out of the bullpen. Mason Williams got a single but Ryan would get a forceout at second to end the seventh. Ben Heller would come in to pitch the eighth for the Railriders. Matt den Dekker drew a one out walk, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the top of the eighth. Bruce Rondon came in to pitch for the Mud Hens in the eighth. Cito Culver drew a leadoff walk but Rondon would get the retire the next three batters. Almanzar would draw a one out walk but Heller would get back to back strikeouts to give the Railriders a 7-5 victory over the Mud Hens.

Thoughts on the game: It was a tale of big innings in this one. The Railriders had a 2-0 lead after two innings then the Mud Hens scored four runs in the third. The Mud Hens had a 5-3 lead going to the bottom of the fifth then the Railriders put up four runs and that was that. Tyler Wade had a great game, going 2 for 4 with a leadoff home run in the top of the first. Mason Williams was another who had a great game as he went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

News: Ernesto Frieri opted out of his minor league deal with the Yankees. In another transaction, the Yankees also released Jason Gurka from his contract.
