The moment was beyond Thalia Irizarry’s wildest dreams but she came up big on the big stage. She scored a game high 16 points as Valley West won their first District title since 1978 to defeat Williamsport 48-32. “Being a freshman and being here, leaving with a gold medal. It just feels amazing.” Valley West Thalia Irizarry said. Lady Spartans Head Coach Gary Ferenchick talked about winning the District Title. “It’s Great for the kids, the staff and the student. It’s our first District title since 1978.”
It was a back and forth affair early in the game with Valley West leading 5-4. Alexandra Chilson gave Williamsport the lead with a basket but the Lady Spartans took back the lead and increased it with baskets by Thalia Irizarry, Madison Perluke and a three point shot by Gabby Marsala to make it 12-6 but the Lady Millinionaires cut the lead down to two with baskets by Payton Baney and Chilson to make it 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Valley West started off by scoring the first four points of the quarter and increased the lead to 11 thanks to a four point play by Perluke to make it 23-12 and took a 24-17 lead into halftime.
Payton Baney scored the first basket for Williamsport to make it a five point game but the Lady Spartans went on a 10-1 run to make it 36-20 at the end of the third. The Spartans took as big of a lead as 16. The Lady Millionaires cut the lead down to nine but the Spartans were able to hold on as they took a 48-32 victory to win the District 2 6A Title. Alexandria Chilson scored nine for Williamsport while Payton Baney added eight.
