Holy Redeemer survives and advances with win over SLA Beeber

 


Survive and advance. Three words that held true in Saturday afternoon's matchup between Holy Redeemer and Science Leadership Academy Beeber as the Royals escaped with a 74-71 victory over the Rockets of SLA. "We fought through the adversity for 32 minutes and got the W" said Royals head coach Paul Guido. "We picked it up after halftime, I'm proud of my team, we stayed composed, did our job and got the win" said Royals senior Zach Perta. Perta had a game high 29 points and Jacob Hunter added 22 points.



It was a back and forth first quarter until Sa'd Jamaladdin hit a three pointer for the Rockets. Holy Redeemer tied up the game with a three point by Jeff Kozerski. SLA then got baskets from Maki Pettigrew and Jamaladdin to be up four. However, Zach Perta and Darryl Wright then tied up the game with back to back baskets. Amadou Dia gave the Rockets the lead with a pair of free throws but as the first quarter was about to come to an end, Jacob Hunter hit a three pointer just before the buzzer to make it 17-16 Royals at the end of the first.



Jahad Marable and Pettigrew got baskets for SLA to start the second and made it a three point game. After a Wright basket, Jamaladdin answered with a basket of his own. Perta then sunk a three pointer to tie the game at 22. After both teams traded points, Hunter gave Holy Redeemer the lead but it ended up short lived as Pettigrew hit a triple to take a 27-26 lead. Hunter hit a pair of free throws and Perta hit a basket to make it a three point game. A three point play by Dia tied the game up at 30. Both teams traded points to tie the game at 32. Just before the buzzer sounded, Jamaladdin gave the Rockets the 34-32 lead at halftime.



Michael Brady hit a bucket to give SLA a four point lead. However, the Royals tied the game up at 38. After a back and forth where each team took the lead. Perta hit a four point play to make it 45-42 then Louis Lussi hit a triple to make it 48-42. SLA did cut down the led to one with baskets at the end of the third quarter and trailed 54-53.



The fourth quarter turned out to be a back and forth with SLA leading for most of the frame. The Rockets held a four point with under two minutes to play. Hunter hit a three pointer with 1:22 left then Wright got the steal and the pass went to Perta who got the score to give the Royals a 72-71 lead. Mark Atherton got the steal and hit one of two free throws to make it 73-71 with 51.5 seconds left. After another Holy Redeemer stop, Perta hit one of two free throws to make it 74-71 with 22.4 left. SLA got the ball, their first three point shot missed but got the offensive rebound. They tried another three pointer but that also fell short and Atherton got the rebound as Holy Redeemer advanced to the second round of the PIAA Boys Basketball 3A State Championship. Sa'd Jamaladdin had 29 points and Maki Pettigrew added 14 for SLA Beeber.
