The Kansas City Chiefs traveled to Foxboro on Sunday night to take on the defending AFC champion New England Patriots. The Chiefs come into the game undefeated at 5-0. The Patriots struggled early in the season but looking like they are turning the corner after victories over the Dolphins and Colts. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has looked impressive in his first year as the starting QB. Patriots QB Tom Brady has proven himself as one of the top QBs in the game. The Patriots would start with the ball and would drive all the way to the Chiefs 40 yard line but would get a turnover on downs. The Chiefs would get the first points of the game on an eight play drive and ended with a 42 yard field goal by Harrison Butker for a 3-0 Chiefs lead. The Patriots would answer with an eight play drive of their own as Stephen Gostkowski would hit a 48 yard field goal to tie the game at 3 with 5:18 to go in the first quarter. First play of the Kansas City drive, Patrick Mahomes' pass would be intercepted by Dont'a Hightower and returned to the Chiefs four yard line. Sony Michel would score from four yards out on the first play after the pick for a 10-3 Patriots lead. On the first play of the next Chiefs' drive, Mahomes would find Kareem Hunt for 25 yards to the Patriots 30 yard line. The drive would end with a 43 yard field goal by Butker for a 10-6 Patriots lead. The second quarter would start with the Patriots ending their 10 play drive as Tom Brady would go to Julian Edelman for a 17 yard touchdown pass for a 17-6 New England advantage. The Chiefs would get another field goal from 24 yards out to make it 17-9 on an 11 play drive. New England would go seven plays as Sony Michel would go in from one yard out for his second touchdown of the night for a 24-9 lead. The Chiefs would get the ball back before halftime and would face a third and 15 and Mahomes would find Tyreek Hill for 27 yards to the Patriots 43 yard line. They would drive to the Patriots 15 yard line and Mahomes pass would be intercepted by Duron Harmon in the end zone as the Patriots would take a 24-9 lead over Kansas City.
The Chiefs would get the ball and Mahomes would find Hunt for a 67 yard touchdown to cut the Patriots lead to 24-16. The Patriots would go on a long 12 play drive and get a 24 yard field goal by Gostkowski to make it 27-16. The Chiefs would answer as they would go on a nine play drive and end with a 30 yard field goal by Butker for a 27-19 lead. The Chiefs would force and recover a fumble on the next Patriots drive and four plays later, Mahomes would find Hill for a 14 yard score to make it a one point game with a 27-26 Patriot lead as we headed toward the fourth quarter. The Patriots would drive down the field and would get a 39 yard field goal by Gostkowski to make 30-26. The Chiefs would get a big kick return by Tremon Smith who returned it 97 yards to the Patriots three yard line. On third and goal at the one yard line and Mahomes would find Hill again for the one yard score for a 33-30 Chiefs lead. The Patriots would face a third and 1 at their own 34 yard line and Brady would find Chris Hogan for 42 yards to the KC 24 yard line. Brady would find Hogan again on the next play for 19 yards to the five yard line. On third and goal from the 4, Brady would run it in for the 37-33 lead with 5:25 to go. The Chiefs would go three and out on their next drive. The Patriots would get a 50 yard field goal by Gostkowski to make 40-33 with 3:15 to go. It wouldn't take long for the Chiefs to tie the game however. First play of the drive, Mahomes would find Hill and he would run it in for his third touchdown of the and Mahomes' fourth touchdown pass to tie the game at 40 with 3:03 to go. At the two-minute warning, the Patriots would face a third and 1 at their own 34, Sony Michel would go for two yards. Brady would find James White for 16 to the KC 48. The Patriots would use up the clock and on the next play, Brady would find Rob Gronkowski for 39 yards to the Chiefs nine yard line and would have a chance to win it in regulation with three seconds to go. Gostkowski would hit the 28 yard field goal as time expired as the Patriots would hand the Chiefs their first loss of the season with a 43-40 victory at home.
