Dallas defense big in win vs Giants

The New York Giants started off their season with a road trip to AT&T Stadium to face off against the Dallas Cowboys. The Giants would be without wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr with an ankle injury. The Cowboys are looking to avenge their two losses to the Giants from last year. It's the first Sunday night football game of the season and let's get to it! The Cowboys started with the ball at their own 24. They would face a third and one and Dak Prescott got the one yard for the first down. Prescott would find Cole Beasley for 13 on second and 7 but the Cowboys wouldn't get another first down and would be forced to punt. The Giants would go three and out on their first offensive drive. They would face a third and 4 and Prescott would find Beasley again for a 12 yard completion. Prescott would find Brice Butler for a 30 yard complete for a first and goal at the three but the Giants defense would hold them to a Dan Bailey 21 yard field goal and the Cowboys would lead with 6:25 remaining in the first quarter. The Cowboys forced their second straight three and out and a punt. Ezekiel Elliot would go for six yards on a second and 2 but on the next set, the Cowboys would face a third and 2 and Prescott went to Terrence Williams for two yards and a first down. Elliott would go five yards on second and 1. The Cowboys faced a third and 12 and Prescott would go to Williams for 15 to convert as the first quarter came to an end with the Cowboys lead 3-0. The Cowboys would go backwards after a seven yard loss on first down and a holding on Dallas on second down. Prescott would find Jason Witten for 11 to make third and 16 but the Giants' Olivier Vernon would sack Prescott and the Cowboys would settle for a 48 yard field goal attempt and he would make it for a 6-0 lead with 12:46 remaining in the second quarter. The Giants would get their first 1st down of the game when Eli Manning went to Sterling Shepard for 12 yards on second and 7. They would face a third and 7 but Eli Manning would find Sterling Shepard would be short and the Giants would punt the ball to the Dallas 21. They would face a third and 6 and Prescott found Williams for a 23 yard completion from their own 48. They would face another third down and this time from two yards out. The pass would fall incomplete and the Cowboys would punt the ball to the Giants 9. First play of the drive, Orleans Darkwa ran for 12 yards to the 21. After a Giants penalty on first down, Manning would find Shepard for five yards, the Cowboys thought they recovered a fumble but the play was ruled dead. The Cowboys would hold them and force a Giants punt once again and the Cowboys would get the ball at their own 35 after a holding call. Elliott would get 10 yards on the first play then would get nine on second and six as they would go to the two-minute warning. On second and 4, the Giants would get called for pass interference and the ball would be placed at the Giants 15. On second and 7, Prescott would find Witten for a 12 yard touchdown. The PAT would make it 13-0 with 1:41 remaining in the second. The Giants would go three and out once again and would punt the ball. The Cowboys would get the ball at their own 24. Prescott would find Williams for 14 on the first play of the drive. On second and 4, Prescott found Williams once again for five yards. Next play, Prescott would run for 17 yards and a pass completion to Witten. A spike from Prescott would turn into a 42 yard FG by Dan Bailey for a 16-0 lead with five seconds remaining in the second. The Giants would take a knee and go into halftime with the Cowboys holding a 16-0 lead. The Giants would get the ball to start the second half and they would start at their own 25. They would face a third and 11 and Manning would find Roger Lewis for 22 yards. Manning would find Shepard for 6 yards on second and 4. They would face a third and 3 and Manning would find Evan Engram for a five yard completion. Manning would find Shane Vereen for eight yards. Manning would find Shepard for a first and goal at the five. The Giants would end up settling for a field goal and the Giants would get on the board with 5:16 remaining in the third. On the next drive, Prescott would find Dez Bryant for 35 yards into Giants territory. They would face a third and 8 and tried a screen play to Elliott but came up short and Dallas would punt. The Giants would face a third and 1 and Paul Perkins would go for four as the third quarter came to an end. The Cowboys would lead 16-3. The Giants would face a third and 1 and the pass would fall incomplete but the Cowboys would be called for roughing the passer. They would face another third down of the drive on a third and 12 and the pass would fall incomplete. The Giants would punt the ball into the end zone for a touchback and the Cowboys would take over at their own 20. They would face a third and 6 and Prescott would go to Beasley who would catch it behind his back for seven yards. They would a third and 3 on the same drive and Prescott threw to Elliott for a 30 yard catch and run. After a holding penalty on Dallas on the next play, the Cowboys would be forced to punt. The Giants would start on their 10. On the first play, Manning would find Engram for a 30 yard reception but on the next play, Manning would be intercepted by Anthony Brown at the Cowboys 48. Elliott would get 12 yard on first and second downs to move the chains. Alfred Morris would run for three yards on second and 2 for a first down. It would force the Giants to use their timeouts. The Cowboys would run the ball as they got to the two-minute warning. Dan Bailey would make a 36 yard field goal and the Cowboys would lead 19-3 with 1:55 remaining in the fourth. The Giants would start at their own 14. Eli Manning would find Roger Lewis on third and 1. The Giants would face a fourth and 5 and Manning would go to Vereen for a first down. Manning would go to Brandon Marshall for a first down. The time would expire on a false start as the Cowboys took their opening game, 19-3.

Thoughts on the game: The Cowboys were just fantastic tonight on the defensive side. They only had one hiccup and it was on the opening drive of the second half. Ezekiel Elliott played great this season, he rushed for 104 yards and caught five passes for 36 yards. For the Giants, the defense played great, only giving up a touchdown and three field goals.
