Cole's big game propels Crusaders over Crestwood

Coughlin at 0-2 came to Mountain Top looking for their first win of the season as they faced Crestwood. The Comets at 2-0 were looking for to get to 3-0 going to the middle part of their schedule. Crestwood would start with the ball and would runs of 14 from Kevin Klusewitz and a 12 yard run from Nick Grosek but the offense would only gain three yards after that and the Comets would be forced to punt. After the Crusaders took over at their own 10, Jake Cole would go 79 yards to the Crestwood 11. After the Comets got a loss of one, they would be called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, giving Coughlin a first and goal at the six. Cole would go in for a four yard touchdown run on second and goal and the PAT would be made to make it 7-0 Coughlin. The Comets would take over at their own 27, Passman would gain 18 on the first play then Passman would find Grosek for 12. After an offsides on Coughlin, Rother would get 3 then Grosek got six for a first down. On second and five, Grosek would 24 yards for the touchdown. The PAT would tie the game at seven. The Crestwood defense would force a three and out to get the ball back. They would face a third and three and Rother would get just three for the first down. They faced another third down and Passman would gain eight and Coughlin would get called for unsportsmanlike conduct to make first and goal from the 9. A false start would move it to the 14, then Passman would be sacked by Tyler DeCinti then Passman would lose nine yards on another to make it third and goal at the 32. Passman would find Rother for 11 but an incompletion would give the Crusaders the ball back at their own 21. Cole would gain 11 yards on first and second down as the first quarter came to a close with the game tied at 7. The Crusaders would face a third and three at their own 38 and Cole would get four for a first down. After a one yard gain on the next play, Garrett Wardle would air it out and the pass would be picked off by Klusewitz and the Comets would get it at their own 23. They would face a third and 3 and Rother get five yards. Passman would go to Brozena for 13 on the next play. A lateral play would force a third and 29 and the Comets would punt after only getting a six yard gain on third down. The Crusaders would begin at their own 23. They faced third and 6 and looked like they would get a first down at midfield but an Illegal Formation would negate the play. An incompletion would force a punt. They start at the Coughlin 32 after a good punt return. The Comets would face a third and 8 and the Crusaders would jump offsides to make it third and 3 and Rother would go for 10. On second and 8, Passman would find Brandon Nieminski for a 12 yard touchdown pass. The PAT would make it 14-7 with 3:48 remaining in the second quarter. The Crusaders started at their own 34. Cole would get 12 yards on the first play but they would only gain 1 yard on each down after that and punt the ball. The Comets would try to score to end the first half but came up empty and led 14-7 at halftime. The Crusaders got the ball to start the second half, they faced a third and 3 early but Cole would get 4 for the first. Later in the drive, they faced a third and 5 at the Crestwood 21 but Vincent Todd would get 11 to make it first and goal at the 10. The Comets defense would hold and get the ball back. Passman would get 24 on the first play but not much after and the Comets would punt. Wardle would go to Eric Sovan for a 20 yard completion. They would face a fourth and 7 and Wardle would find Todd for eight to make it first and goal at the six. The Crusaders would face a fourth and goal at the four and Wardle would find Salem Diop in the end zone and the PAT would be made to tie the game at 14. The Comets on their next drive would face a third and one at the end of the third quarter with the game tied at 14. On third and 1, Rother would find 6 but a holding penalty on second down would kill the Comets and force them to punt. The Comets would force a punt on a three and out.  The Comets would face a third and 3 on the next drive but a bad snap would be recovered by Coughlin at their own 19 and Jake Cole would take it 19 yards on the next play to give the Crusaders the lead. The PAT would be blocked to make it 20-14 with 6:31 remaining. On the next drive, Passman would find Nieminski for 11 on second and 8 and then Brozena for 20 on the next play to get the Comets in Crusader territory. Grosek would go 22 to the Crusader 29. After a holding call on Crestwood and a Passman five yard run, they would face a second and 12 at the Crusader 26. Passman's pass would be intercepted by Diop and the Crusaders would take over at their own 15. On second and 5, Cole would get 6 to make it first down and burn the Comets timeouts and the Crusaders would punt the ball away. The Comets would face a fourth and 10 at their own 37 and Passman would try to get the ball to Nieminski but Todd would swat the ball away at the last minute to give the Crusaders the ball back. On the next play, Cole would bounce and bowl over defenders for a 37 yard touchdown run. The PAT would make it 27-14 Crusaders. The Comets would get into Coughlin territory at the 47 after Passman found Rother for 14 but the Comets would face a fourth and 12 and Passman would get intercepted by Cole to seal the Crusaders first win of the season.

Thoughts on the game: Jake Cole had a great game for the Crusaders, going for three touchdowns on the game and picking off the pass that sealed the game to give them their first win. I feel as though the Crusaders were going to pick up steam after starting off 0-2 and a big win on the road. For Crestwood, they had chances to take the victory, but several mistakes cost them but all they need to do is keep working. Both teams have a great chance to go far in the District 2 Playoffs.
