Patriots advance with win over Crestwood

The Pittston Area Patriots and the Crestwood Comets traveled to Hazleton Area for their District 2 5A Quarterfinal matchup. The Patriots and Comets split their season series with each winning on their home floor.
The Comets would get to a 6-0 lead with three pointers by Marcus Vieney and Paul Feisel and would lead 11-5 at the end of the first quarter. Crestwood would take a ten point lead with a Nick Ruggeri three pointer in the second quarter. However the Patriots would come roaring back. They would start by getting back to back three pointers by Brennan Higgins and JJ Walsh. Higgins would then get a basket to cut the lead to two. A pair of Vieney free throws would make it a four point lead. Walsh would hit another three pointer and the Comets would lead 25-24 at halftime.
Walsh would hit back to back threes to give the Patriots their first lead of the game at 30-25. The Patriots would outscore the Comets 10-2 in the third for a 34-27 lead after three. The Patriots would increase their lead early in the fourth with a 7-0 run for a 14 point lead. Crestwood would make it interesting down the stretch. Being down 13, the Comets would go on an 8-0 run with a three pointer by Vieney, a three point play by Petrosky and a basket by Vieney to make it a five point Patriot lead. After the Patriots made one of two free throws to make it a six point lead. After both teams traded points and Higgins sunk a pair of free throws, Vieney would hit a three point to cut the Pittston Area lead to three. Andrew Krawczyk would seal the game with five free throws down the stretch as the Patriots would advance to the District Semifinals. The Patriots will play Wallenpaupack on Friday at a site and time to be determined.

Thoughts on the game: It was a pretty crazy game to say the least. In the first quarter, it looked like Crestwood had all the momentum in racing to an 11-5 lead and looked good midway through the second quarter, leading by 10. However, the Patriots fought back and would cut the ten point deficit to one at halftime then would take the lead that they would not relinquesh. The Comets would make it interesting in the fourth, cutting the lead to three late in the fourth but were unable to tie the game. JJ Walsh had a great game, scoring 18 and propelling the Patriots in the comeback. Brennan Higgins also added 15. For the Comets, Marcus Vieney had a great game, scoring a game high 29 points. Paul Feisel added nine.
