Dunmore Wins 3A Girls District 2 Title

After Holy Redeemer took a lead late in the third quarter, something clicked for Dunmore. Their defense wouldn’t give up a single basket the rest of the way as Dunmore turned a close game at the end of the third quarter into a 50-30 victory over Holy Redeemer to take the District 2 3A Championship. It was the first District title for Lady Bucks Head Coach Carrie Toomey who took over for longtime coach Ben O’Brien. “That’s what we’ve been. We build our offense off of our defense. We get stops and that just gets us going.” Carrie Toomey said. "Our defense is something we fall back on. Everyone works so hard every night and it showed this afternoon and at the end of the game." said senior Ciera Toomey.

The Lady Royals started off by leading 5-0 with a basket by Megan Albrecht and a three point play by Jillian DelBalso. After Dunmore got a free throw by Tristan Canavan, Sophia Talutto scored eight straight points to make it 9-5. After a Mia Ashton three pointer, North Carolina commit Ciera Toomey scored five straight points to make it 14-8. Canavan and Talutto made it a ten point lead. Tessa Cegelka hit a three pointer for Holy Redeemer at the buzzer to make it 18-11 at the end of the first. Defense prevailed in the second quarter as neither team scored a basket until there was close to two minutes in the quarter. Five points were scored in the frame. A basket by Amanda Dempsey for Dunmore and a basket and free throw by Holy Redeemer’s McKenzie Chimock and Dunmore led 20-14 at halftime.

Dempsey hit a three pointer as Dunmore took a 23-14 lead but Mia Ashton and DelBalso each hit three pointers. DelBalso then hit a three point play to tie the game at 23. Canavan then hit a free throw to take back the lead for the Lady Bucks. DelBalso hit a basket to take a 25-24. After Talutto hit a free throw to tie the game up. Ashton and Angelina Corridoni each hit a pair of free throws to take a 29-25 Royals lead. Dunmore scored the final seven points of the quarter to lead 32-29. The Lady Bucks defense held the Royals without a basket in the fourth quarter and won 50-30 to take the District 2 3A Championship. Sophomore guard Sophia Talutto on winning the District Championship. "I'm on Cloud nine right now. I'm so happy for all of them. We worked so hard. So happy the fans came out and so grateful for the community." Jillian DelBalso added 11 points for the Lady Royals.

For Ciera Toomey, it was a big step for her after getting injured in the District Championship last year. "It helps that we won but it also is a big step to play at the place where I got hurt. There's different steps. Your first fall, your time back where you got hurt. You start to gain more confidence and I'm happy we got the win." Toomey said.
