The Pittston Area Patriots traveled to Hazleton on Friday night to take on the Hazleton Area Cougars. The Cougars won the last meeting at Pittston Area and are hoping to sweep the Patriots. The Cougars are coming off a victory over Valley West. Pittston Area is coming off a win over Wilkes-Barre Area.
The Cougars would start with a 6-2 lead but the Patriots would get a three point play by Mike George and baskets by Logan Booth and Andrew Krawczyk for a 9-6 Patriots lead. The Cougars however would go on a 9-3 run to end the quarter and lead 16-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Cougars would start the second quarter on a 12-2 run to lead by eight and would lead 30-21 at halftime.
The Patriots would get five straight points from George to cut the Cougars lead to four. After both teams traded baskets, JJ Walsh would hit a three to make the Cougars lead at one but baskets by Angel Cruz and Chris Garcia would make it a five point lead. Logan Booth would get fouled at the end of the third quarter and would make one of two free throws as the Cougars would lead 38-34 at the end of three. A three point play by Cruz would start the fourth for the Cougars and make it a seven point lead. A three pointer by Krawczyk would cut the lead to four. After the Cougars and Patriots traded baskets, Booth would hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to two. After Dewin Concepcion made one of two free throws, Brennan Higgins would make a pair of free throws to tie the game at 46 then with 51.8 to go, Higgins would make another pair of free throws to give the Patriots a 48-46 lead. After a Cougar miss, JJ Walsh would sink a pair of free throws to make it a four point game. Angel Cruz would hit a basket but Booth would sink both free throws as the Patriots would take a 52-48 victory over Hazleton Area. It is the first time since 2005 that the Patriots would defeat Hazleton Area.
Thoughts on the game: It was an incredible win for Pittston Area. JJ Walsh had a great game with 13 points. Logan Booth, Mike George and Andrew Krawczyk also did a great job tonight, each of them scoring 11 points. For Hazleton Area, Angel Cruz had a great game in the paint tonight, scoring 16 points. Chris Garcia had a good game off the bench, scoring 10 points. It's going to be an interesting final week of the regular season in WVC Division 1 with Hazleton Area playing Dallas, Wilkes-Barre Area and Crestwood next week. Pittston Area plays Berwick, Crestwood and Nanticoke to finish their season.
