Campbell's big fourth propels Cougars past Crestwood

The Crestwood Comets and Hazleton Area Cougars renewed their rivalry on Tuesday at Crestwood High School. They played in front of a near capacity crowd in Mountain Top. Both teams are currently tied for first place in WVC Division 1 alongside Pittston Area. The winner would stay in first place and the loser would potentially drop to third.
The Comets would lead 6-2 early with threes by Paul Feisel. However, the Cougars would take the lead with baskets by Angel Cruz and Dewin Concepcion. The Cougars would take an 11-7 lead but the Comets would tie with a basket by Brandon Nieminski and a steal and layup by Jake Zaleski. Feisel would give the Comets the lead with a basket. It would be a back and forth with each team taking the lead and tying the game. With under 30 seconds to play, Ryan Petrosky would sink a three pointer but the Cougars Scott Campbell would hit a 3 just before the buzzer to tie the game at 18 at the end of the first quarter. A three point play by Mike Zaleski would give the Comets the lead. The Comets would lead 25-22 but Campbell would tie it on a three pointer. Nieminski would give Crestwood the lead back but a three by Andrew Vayda would give Hazleton Area the lead. They would get a three pointer by Kevin Gil and pair of free throws by Concepcion to take a six point lead. The Cougars would lead 36-32 at halftime.
The Comets would tie the game with four straight points by Jake Zaleski. The Cougars would take a 40-36 lead with a free throw from Vayda and Cruz and a basket by Cruz. The Comets would end the third on a 10-0 run and lead 46-40 at the end of the third. The Cougars would cut the lead to one with five straight points by Campbell. With the Comets up one, the Cougars were given a technical foul and Ryan Petrosky would make both free throws to make it a three point lead. However, a basket by Vayda and a pair of free throws by Campbell would give the Cougars a 51-50 lead. The Comets would take the lead on a Feisel basket. Both teams would take turns taking the lead. After Jake Zaleski got a putback to give Crestwood the lead. Scott Campbell would be fouled and would make the first shot to take the game but the second shot would be missed at the front of the rim and he would grab the rebound of his missed shot and the Cougars would take the lead 58-56. The Comets had a chance to tie the game on a pair of free throws but the second shot wouldn't fall and Campbell would hit four free throws and the Cougars would take the road victory at Crestwood 62-57.

Thoughts on the game: It was a hard fought game by both teams. Everyone was into the game and it felt like a playoff atmosphere. Scott Campbell had a great game, he scored 14 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter. Andrew Vayda also had a great game with 17 points. For Crestwood, Jake Zaleski had a good game with 17 and Paul Feisel also had a good game with 14.
