One Down, Five To Go

As the month changes over to the month of May, the Railriders ended the month 12-10. Two games out of first place. Things can change over the course of the season, especially in minor league baseball, you can get callus, injuries, win streaks, losing streaks and other things. All things considered, the Railriders look like they'll be fine especially when Dietrich Enns comes back from injury. This week was overall dominated with great offensive performances and with that, here are the three stars of the week for the Railriders.

Third Star: Clint Frazier: Frazier had a great week, recording 6 hits, with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs.

Second Star: Cito Culver: He had a heck of a game on Thursday in the series finale against Louisville, hitting two homers. He also had seven hits, three of them were doubles and he had four RBIs.

First Star: Dustin Fowler: His spot here was really not going to be questioned, especially after what he did on Sunday. He hit for the cycle on Sunday, including a walkoff homer to beat Indianapolis in eleven innings. On the week, he had eleven hits, with 3 doubles, two triples, two home runs and five RBIs. He's also been playing all three outfield positions for the Railriders.

Here is what the local professional players are up to as of this week:

Matt Wotherspoon: Currently playing for Double-A Trenton. He's appeared in six games, going 1-1 with an ERA of 2. He's thrown 9 innings, striking out 9.

Cory Spangenberg: He was called up earlier this week to San Diego. He's played in five games. He's hitting .222 with a double and an RBI.

Kyle McMyne: Currently playing for Triple-A Louisville. The Old Forge native visited PNC Field when the Bats traveled to Moosic. He's appeared in nine games, going 1-0 with an ERA of 0.59. He's recorded seven strikeouts in 15 and 1/3 innings.

Joe McCarthy: Playing for Double-A Montgomery. He's played 20 games, currently hitting .301 with five doubles, a home run and ten RBIs. He's also stolen two bases.

Mike Papi: Playing for Double-A Akron. He's been in 20 games, hitting .292 with a double, three home runs and nine RBIs.

Max Kranick: He's currently in Pirates extended spring training.

Tony Hernandez: Currently in Yankees extended spring training.

Chris Sweeney: Evansville has not started their season yet. They begin on May 12th.

Smith started off by throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first. Dustin Fowler hit a one out triple to right then Clint Frazier drew a walk. Ji-Man Choi drove home Fowler on an RBI single for a 1-0 Railriders lead. Rob Refsnyder followed with a single that brought home Frazier and a 2-0 lead. Williams would bring home Choi for the 3-0 lead on an RBI groundout. A groundout would end the inning. Jason Rogers drew a leadoff walk. After a strikeout, Jacob Stalings hit a single to left, then Anderson Feliz hit a three run homer to left to tie the game at 3. After a flyout to left, Justin Maffei singled to left but a flyout ended the top of the second. Hutchison would throw a 1-2-3 bottom of the second to keep the game tied. Max Moroff hit a leadoff single to left, but a lineout and a double play ended the third. With one out, Clint Frazier hit a home run to left for a 4-3 Railriders. A groundout and a fly out ended the inning. Austin Meadows hit a single to lead off the top of the fourth, then Stalings drove home Meadows to tie the game at 4 with an RBI Double. Anderson Feliz moved Stalings to third on a flyout to right, but Eury Perez would single home Stalings for a 5-4 Indians lead. Maffei would follow with a single to center, moving Perez to second. Chris Bostick would draw a walk to load the bases. Tyler Webb would come in to pitch for the Railriders. Max Moroff would bring home Perez on an RBI single to make it 6-4 Indians. A flyout and a strikeout ended the top of the fourth. Hutchison threw another 1-2-3 frame for the Indians. Webb threw a 1-2-3 inning for the Railriders in the fifth. Wilkin Castillo led off by reaching on an error, but was forced out on a grounder to short. Dustin Fowler would bring home Wade on an RBI double to make a one run game. Stalings would throw out Fowler trying to steal third for the second out. Clint Frazier would draw a walk then Ji-Man Choi singled to load the bases, but a strikeout got the Indians out of the inning holding a one run lead. Webb threw a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth. Cito Culver hit a one out single to right. After a flyout, Castillo would double to right to move Culver to third. Dan Runzler would enter the game to pitch for the Indians and would get a strikeout to end the sixth. Giovanny Gallegos came in to pitch the seventh for the Railriders and threw a 1-2-3 inning to keep it a one run deficit. Dustin Fowler led off with a single to center but Runzler induced a 4-3 double play then a strike out ended the inning. Chasen Shreve came in to pitch for the Railriders in the eighth and threw a 1-2-3 inning. Mason Williams hit a one out bunt single but a popout and a ground out ended the eighth. Ben Heller comes in the game to pitch the ninth for the Railriders. Maffei drew a one out walk and Castillo would get Maffei out at second trying to steal for the second out. Bostick would hit a double to left and a wild pitch on the next batter would move him to third but Heller got a strikeout to give the Railriders a chance to tie it or take the win. Angel Sanchez came in for the save in the ninth for the Indians. Tyler Wade drew a one out walk. Dustin Fowler who is a homer away from the cycle was barely short of a home run but got a double to right, moving Wade to third. Clint Frazier ended up being intentionally walked to load the bases. On the next batter, Wade would score from third to tie the game at 6. The Indians elected to intentionally walk Choi to load the bases once again. Fowler would be out at the plate on a forceout, then a flyout ended the ninth as they headed to extra innings. Eric Wood hit a leadoff single to left. After a flyout and a strikeout, Ernesto Frieri came in to pitch for the Railriders. Stalings would draw a walk but got a strikeout to end the top of the tenth. Sanchez would throw a 1-2-3 tenth as we headed toward the eleventh. Bostick hit a two out single and Max Moroff would draw a walk but a strikeout kept the game tied. After Sanchez got Tyler Wade on a groundout, Dustin Fowler would complete the cycle with a home run to right to walkoff the Railriders 7-6 over Indianapolis.

Thoughts on the game: Wow, what a game!! Dustin Fowler tied the franchise record for hits in a game and only the fourth player in SWB history to hit for the cycle. The Railriders made a heck of a comeback in this game, scoring in the ninth. The bullpen was incredible this afternoon for the Railriders, not giving up a run after the fifth innng. Clint Frazier added his third home run of the season for the Railriders. Angel Feliz had a three run homer early in the game, tying up the game.

It's Gonna Be May

This week, there were some interesting games and a few upsets. Some teams proved they can play with the best of them and some have the flare for the dramatic. This week, the calendar moves to May and that means big games are looming and there is a big game looming in softball as soon as the calendar moves to May that features two undefeated teams in Nanticoke and Hazleton Area. This will be the only time these two will play each other as they play in different divisions and different classifications. Here's a few things that occurred this week

NANTICOKE UPSET VALLEY WEST
Nanticoke beat Valley West 5-4 on Friday. Trahjan Krupinski hit a game-deciding three run homer in the victory. They will play Berwick on Monday, Division 1 leading Crestwood on Tuesday and finish their week with Tunkhannock. I also will mention that they play a exhibition matchup at Hanover Area on Sunday at 2.

NANTICOKE TAKES A BIG DIVISION 2 MATCHUP
The baseball team wasn't the only team in Nanticoke with a big win on Friday, the Trojanettes' softball team took down Tunkhannock 6-5. The Trojanettes will travel to Hazleton Area on Monday in a matchup of division leaders and undefeated teams.

LAKELAND BASEBALL STAYS UNDEFEATED
Lakeland took down Mid Valley 2-0 and then escaped an upset loss to Western Wayne 6-5 to stay District 2's only unbeaten team remaining. Lakeland hosts Holy Cross on Monday and then travels to Dunmore on Thursday.

MID VALLEY SOFTBALL HANDS HOLY CROSS FIRST LOSS
Mid Valley took down Holy Cross on Thursday 6-3 to give the Crusaders their first loss of the season. Both are currently 6-1 and have played their two games against each other. The next time they would play would be if they both stay unbeaten the rest of the way. If that happens, they would play for a Division championship.

CRESTWOOD BASEBALL SWEEPS THE WEEK
Crestwood started off the week with a 2-1 victory over Tunkhannock on Monday. On Wednesday, they cruised to a victory over Dallas. Berwick on Friday was possibly the most interesting one. They were up 3-1 with two outs in the top of the seventh, Berwick tied on two bases loaded walks. In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, James Graves scored on a passed ball to give them the sweep of the week. However, big games will loom as the calendar goes to May. They travel to Nanticoke on Tuesday, hoping to avoid a trap game. Have the rest of the week off from divisional games.

HOLY REDEEMER BASEBALL DOMINATES THE WEEK
The Royals Wednesday through Friday dominated by outscoring their opponents 35-1. Beating Meyers 8-0 on Wednesday, MMI 14-1 on Thursday and Northwest 13-0 on Friday. It's looking like the Royals could be turning the table on their season.

Thoughts on the game: The offense was great for Indianapolis today. Three players had three hits for the Indians. Three players had home runs today. Eddy Rodriguez had a great game at the plate, getting 2 hits, one of them being a double.

Crestwood squeaks by Tunkhannock

The Comets coming off a big victory over big victories over Valley West and Wyoming Area last week, looked to build momentum as they hosted Tunkhannock. The Tigers came off a big win over Valley West and looked to build upon that victories. It was a battle of first place teams in Mountain Top as Colin Macko of Crestwood faced off against Matt Goodwin of Tunkhannock. Tyler Faux led off the game with a walk, moving to second on a stolen base and to third on a passed ball. With one out, Matt Goodwin would hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Faux for a 1-0 Tunkhannock lead. A groundout would end the inning. Colin Macko got hit by a pitch with one out and James Graves singled to move Macko to second but a popout and a strikeout end the inning with Goodwin holding a 1-0 lead. Dylan Mislevy hit a two out single to right but was out trying to stretch it out into a double. Curtis Tokach led off by reaching on an error, but Goodwin would retire the next three batters to hold the one run lead. Jack Fenwick would reach on an error with one out but a strikeout and a groundout ended the top of the third. Brett Caladie and Colin Macko led off the bottom of the third with singles and moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by James Graves. Justin Darden drove home Caladie on a single to tie the game at 1, then Anthony Kovalchik brought home Macko for a 2-1 lead as Kovalchik reached on an error. A popout and a flyout ended the inning. Macko threw a 1-2-3 fourth to keep the one run lead. Goodwin answered with a 1-2-3 inning of his own in the bottom of the fourth. David Baltrusaitus led off with a single to left then advanced to second on a balk. Macko would retire the next three batters to get out of the inning. Darden hit a two out single but a popup ended the fifth. Goodwin would draw a leadoff walk but a groundout ended the top of the sixth. Don Faux came in to pitch the sixth for the Tigers. Faux threw a 1-2-3 sixth to keep the Tigers deficit to one run. Macko would throw a 1-2-3 seventh for the complete game victory and the Comets fifth straight win.

Thoughts on the game: Close low scoring ballgame. Tough way for either of these teams to lose. Macko was great on the mound, allowing two hits, while striking out four. Justin Darden has continued his hot season, getting two hits today and driving in the tying run in the third. Matt Goodwin has a great game on the mound, going five inning, allowing giving up two runs and five hits.

Lail got the next three batters out to extend the scoreless streak of Indianapolis. Hutchison threw his second consecutive 1-2-3 inning in the fourth. Edgar Santana came in for the save for the Indians. Santana threw a 1-2-3 ninth for the save as the Indians prevented the sweep with a 4-2 victory.

Thoughts on the game: The Indians finally broke through by scoring not just a run but four runs. The pitching was phenominal for Indianapolis. They retired the final twenty-one Railriders which was seven straight innings of retiring the side. Chris Bostick had a great game, going 2 for 4.

Up Next: The Railriders get a day off and then return home for a seven game homestand starting on Tuesday. They start a three game set with Louisville on Tuesday. The Bats pitcher has yet to be determined. The Railriders will go with Caleb Smith.

Short and Long

Doing baseball for several years as a scorekeeper and as a blogger, I've noticed a few things when it comes to the Spring Sports season. It feels like it's a long season but in reality, you're done by May unless you win your District Championship. Yeah, you start in March primarily inside and eventually move outside when the fields start to get playable or it gets warmer. I have always considered the spring sports season the shortest because with the fall, football is ten weeks which takes almost three months to complete. Basketball games start in December go on til mid-February or March if you qualify for the State Tournament but anyway, baseball and softball feels like it's a long season but it's really only a two month long season with a lot of twists and turns. Well with my rant done, here's a few things that happened this week.

CRESTWOOD TAKES THREE THIS WEEK
Crestwood started off the week with an upset victory 6-4 over Valley West at home. The Comets have been a thorn in Valley West's side for the last two years and with this year having expanded classifications, they could possibly meet in a District Playoff game. They will definitely play again as they travel to Valley West in a few weeks. On Thursday, they escaped a letdown game with a victory over Wyoming Area 7-5. Combined with Valley West's loss, the Comets have first place all alone. Then on Saturday at King's College, they beat Marian Catholic 10-4. After researching Marian Catholic, they were 6-3 on the season. This week looms big for Crestwood as they have a three game week, when they host the first place team in Division 2 Tunkhannock on Monday. Then travel to Dallas on Wednesday and finish off the week hosting Berwick.

WVC SOFTBALL UNDEFEATEDS FALL
Valley West lost both their games this week. Valley West fell to Crestwood 11-7 on Tuesday afternoon and fell to Hazleton Area 6-1 on Thursday. Hanover Area lost on Thursday to Wyoming Seminary 5-4 to end their undefeated season. Holy Redeemer and Nanticoke however stayed undefeated. The Royals beat Northwest 7-0 and Nanticoke knocked off Tunkhannock 2-1 on a walkoff single as well as Berwick 4-1. Hazleton Area also stayed undefeated with wins over Pittston Area (10-1) and of course Valley West.

WEST SCRANTON TAKES TWO OF THREE FROM DELAWARE VALLEY
Delaware Valley took the first game of the set on Monday 7-1 at West Scranton. Then West Scranton returned the favor by taking the second game at Delaware Valley 4-1 on Wednesday. In the third game at Misericordia University, West Scranton took the victory 9-3 to take two out of three from the Warriors.

LACKAWANNA LEAGUE TEAMS STAY UNBEATEN
Holy Cross stayed undefeated with victories over Old Forge 7-6 and Dunmore 15-3. Montrose knocked off Mountain View 11-0 and Susquehanna 15-0. Montrose takes on Blue Ridge and Lackawanna Trail and Holy Cross faces Riverside and Mid Valley.

MEYERS STAYS UNBEATEN
Meyers continued their winning ways with victories over Wyoming Seminary 3-2 on Monday, Northwest 8-0 on Wednesday and GAR 9-2 on Saturday. This week, they take on Lake-Lehman on Monday, Holy Redeemer on Tuesday and GAR on Thursday. At 7-0 on the season, they look like the prohibitive favorite for a trip to PNC Field on Memorial Day Weekend.

TUNKHANNOCK STAYS ATOP THE DIVISION 2 STANDINGS
Despite losing to Dallas on Tuesday, Tunkhannock would stay atop the Division 2 standings with a walkoff victory over Valley West and combined with Berwick's loss to Tunkhannock, kept the Tigers on top by themselves. They will have a tough road ahead of them this week as they travel to Crestwood in a battle of first place teams. Host Hazleton Area, then travel to Pittston Area.

LAKELAND BASEBALL STAYS UNDEFEATED
Lakeland continued to stay unbeaten as they took down Carbondale 4-2 and Riverside 9-7. This week, they take on Mid Valley on Monday and Western Wayne on Thursday.

Deep Goes Frazier!!

The Railriders looked to get their second straight victory over Indianapolis. The Indians went with Josh Lindblom. The Railriders earlier in the day brought up Daniel Camarena from Double-A Trenton for the start. Tyler Wade led off with a walk. Following a flyout, Dustin Fowler singled to right to move Wade to second but a flyout and a popout kept the Railriders off the board. Camarena threw a 1-2-3 first for the Railriders. Lindblom threw a 1-2-3 second to keep the game scoreless. Camarena threw his second consecutive 1-2-3 inning for the Railriders. With two outs, Clint Frazier hit a home run to left for a 1-0 Railriders lead. On the next at-bat, Dustin Fowler singled to left but the top half of the third ended with a flyout to left. Jacob Stallings led off with a single to center, but Camarena induced a 6-3 double play for the first two outs then he got Anderson Feliz to flyout to center for the third out. Ji-Man Choi would double to right to lead off the top of the fourth, but Lindblom would retire the next three batters to keep it a one run deficit. Chris Bostick singled to lead off the bottom half of the fourth but got the next three batters out to end the fourth with the Indians still off the scoreboard. Eddy Rodriguez singled to left to lead off the fifth. Following a popup, Frazier would draw a walk. Lindblom got Fowler to popout for the second out but Rob Refsnyder would draw a walk to load the bases, but Lindblom got Choi to strike out the end the threat with no damage. Camarena threw a 1-2-3 fifth to keep the Indians once again off the scoreboard. Lindblom threw a 1-2-3 sixth to keep the Railriders to one run. Camarena threw a 1-2-3 sixth for another scoreless inning. Angel Sanchez came in for the seventh for the Indians. Clint Frazier singled to right with two outs but a popout ended the top of the seventh. Austin Meadows hit an infield single and Tyler Jones came in to pitch for the Railriders. Meadows would steal second, then Jason Rogers walks but Jones would get Eric Wood to fly out and Joey Terdoslavich to strike out to end the seventh. Refsnyder would lead off the eighth with an infield single, but he would be forced out at second and Sanchez would get the next two batters out to keep it 1-0. Jones would strike out the side to keep the Indians off the board. Dovydas Neverauskas came in to pitch the ninth for the Indians. Neverauskas threw a 1-2-3 ninth to give the Indians a chance to tie or walk it off in the ninth. Ernesto Frieri came in for the save in the ninth for the Railriders. Frieri would throw a 1-2-3 ninth as the Railriders won a second consecutive 1-0 game.

Thoughts on the game: Well, another 1-0 game. Pitching was great once again on both sides. More impressive by Daniel Camarena, who was just called up from Double-A Trenton today to make the start, striking out five and not walking a batter.

Up Next: The Railriders conclude their three set in Indianapolis. Brady Lail takes on Drew Hutchison. Gametime is at 1:35 PM.

News: Daniel Camarena was called up today from Double-A Trenton to make the start. To make room, the Railriders optioned JR Graham to Trenton.

Thoughts on the game: The pitching for the Railriders was spectacular tonight. In fact, both sides were great. Here's where I would talk about Tejada but I believe I've said enough that he belongs on a major league roster.

Up Next: The Railriders continue their three game series in Indianapolis. The Railriders is still to be announced and the Indians will go with Josh Lindblom.

Thoughts on the game: Well a dominant game by the Louisville Bats. Juan Perez had an impressive game with 2 homers, one inside the park and another to center. The Railriders had way too many errors in the loss (They had four).
